How are you different in the real world?

I find it so interesting to see the way certain people I know personally, live fairly different lives through the eyes of their social media like facebook and I would expect that it's really not so different in forums across the web.

It would be interesting to hear people's honest opinions about how they're personalities are different in the online world as opposed to everyday real world life.

As for me I'm always the same no matter where I go.... and I have no faults ... and I rock

But seriously... I guess in real life I don't go as in depth into things on an everyday basis but I guess in many ways I act similar because both in real life and on the web I'd rather listen/read than talk/post hence my amazingly high *insert sarcasm* post count for being around since 2002. I feel my sense of humor is similar (dry sarcasm) and I feel I'd generally prefer to keep my opinions to myself rather than give an opinion on every topic that comes my way. I think that how I tend to write online is closer to how I behave around people who really know me than how I behave amongst my casual acquaintances.

So what do you guys thinks? Do you try to sound cooler than you really are online? Do you let your nerdy side loose online? Or are you just a perfect creation no matter where your thoughts are heard?

Re: How are you different in the real world?

I joke around 10x as much in the real world. Pretty much anything I say is not serious. It's hard to do that on here because nearly every post I would make would have a smiley face in it and I would never really help contribute by joking all the time.

Also, I am pretty shy in real life and if I don't know you at all, then we're not talking unless you say something to me first. I also pretty much never talk about video games in real life.

Re: How are you different in the real world?

I don't talk about video games much in the real world and I don't discuss sports in-depth. All my friends are either casual sports fans or non-sports fans so it's hard to have the same kind of discussion IRL as I do on OS.

I don't have an internet persona that I try to go by. I think I'm myself online. I try not to be as sarcastic online as it's hard to determine when someone is being sarcastic, but even in the real world I have a dry sense of humor so my sarcasm is hard to detect.

Pretty much me. Except I am not that shy anymore, I used to be very very shy though. I really have no problems to talking to anyone I don't know anymore. I just like to get a lot of laughs (and some wtf looks if they don't pick up my sarcasm).

Spot on with the last sentence as well, I don't really talk about video games to anyone, just something I do to enjoy and occasionally talk about on here.

Same here. My video game discussion is more so on here. I only have one friend who I can have in depth discussions with.

Other than that (for better or worse), I'm pretty much the same.

Re: How are you different in the real world?

Ha, I'm way more opinionated and talkative on here then in real life. I tend to stay quiet and just listen, but on the message boards I like to get my opinion out there. Then again, it's because we're talking about sports and video games. When those come up in conversation at work or hanging out with friends, I always have something to say.

I'm always sarcastic or joking in real life... keeps everyone loose. Probably to a fault sometimes, I've had people say, "Not everything's a joke, you know," to me before. I guess that's just the way I deal with everyday life.

I'd say, besides being more talkative online, I act the same. Kinda just another user, part of the crowd, not trying to be the big **** or talk down to people. I can definitely be more concise with what I want to say too; I've always fancied myself as a better writer then speaker. See? I said "fancied." Who says that in person?

I'm the same way offline as I am online. Talk about the same stuff everywhere I go.

I think a lot of my conversation in the real world is a lot less topical, and just contains much more regular human interaction. I'm not quite the essayist in regular talk as I am on here. I suppose here, I "post like I think," as opposed to "post like I speak."

I still have the same opinions, though.

Yeah, that's what I'm like. More a thinker then a speaker, but when it's on forums, I can convey those thoughts into posts.

To be honest I am always winking at people when I am not being serious.

Same here, I think if I did have more friends who were into sports and video games as much as I am, I wouldn't spend half the time on OS that I do.

I'm really no different on the internet than in the real world. Maybe the only difference would be that on the internet I find it easier to put my ideas out there and express my opinions more openly. I'm kind of introverted when it comes to real life and will hold back a little more.
