    Buying a used engine???

About a year ago the timing belt broke on my 02 VW Passat, and it warped/seared the heads, in a nutshell it ruined the engine.

The car has been sitting ever since but I love the car so much and it is "Mint Condition" and I have decided to fork out the cash and replace the engine. My question is has anyone ever purchased an engine off ebay? I have scoured the internet and I did find an engine that only had 36,000 miles and it comes with the Carfaxx. I just am reluctant to shell out $1995 for the engine. Shipping is included.

Any advice is appreciated as I am having no luck trying local Wrecking yards. Thanks in advance

    Re: Buying a used engine???

Between myself and my dad, we have bought plenty of car parts from ebay, but have never ordered an entire motor.

I'm not too sure how expensive those motors usually are, but I'm sure you do. Just check out the seller's history and if everything checks out.. go for it.

I would also consider checking around local junk yards (if you think there's a possibility there may be one of those cars wrecked somewhere) and you may find a better deal on an engine with lower mileage.

I bought an engine for one of my cars from a junk yard and it came out of a vehicle with 30k miles on it and I got it for about 5-600$ less then what people were wanting on ebay.

      No success locally.

The problem I'm running into is the type of car. For some reason a Passat engine is twice the price for a Jetta.

On Ebay I found one with 41,000 miles for a Buy Now for $1900 but also the option to "Make an Offer" I low-balled and threw an offer of $1400. Lol. The seller has over 6000 trans, so I'm good there. Just waiting on a reponse. Got a shop that is gonna install it for $625. Wish me luck

Personally I would be very careful buying a used engine online. To me those are one of the things I would like to physically see in person before purchasing but that is just me.

Just an update: I was able to make a counter-offer on a engine that had 41,000 miles. They wanted $2006 and I countered and with $1400 and they accepted plus $150 for shipping. $1550 shipped from a repitable Parts shop on Ebay.

The car that I am replacing the engine is a 2002 VW Passat 1.8L Turbo. I just love my car. Paid Mid 20's for it brand new and just am attached to this car. Lol

Engine will be here tomorrow and the shop that is installing the engine informed me that my car should be ready by Sat. afternoon.
