Does anyone here do any freelance writing?

I am really thinking that I need to start writing on the side, or at least attempt to do so by submitting articles to newspapers or magazines.

Or maybe just starting a blog. I don't really know at this point.

I've had two or three of my close friends tell me that I'm talented and need to start getting paid to write. I guess I just don't know where to start. I have always wanted to write a book, and have a couple of different ideas.

If anyone is interested, I've written some stuff here on OS in the Dynasty HQ sub-forum.

I tricked my buddy into thinking that I had a very damning video of him and I playing one-on-one basketball when we were kids. We are in a Fantasy Football league together, and he loves to talk junk on the league message board. I told him if he continued to target me, I'd post the video of me beating him 15-3. I used to always house him, but I don't really have the video. I did write up a bit of a play-by-play of the video, and that is when he told me that I could write for ESPN.com. He is one that really does not hand out praise easily, so to hear that from him really made me think.

I am just curious if anyone here is a writer. If so, how did you get started?

I used to write full time and still do some freelance work on the side of my new job. If you're interested in pursuing freelance opportunities then you should contact local newspapers and magazines, they are always looking for freelancers. Be ready with specific ideas for articles, and put together a portfolio if you can. If you just say "I'd like to write," well, they're not going to hire you.

Also check out Examiner.com, it's essentially a blog but you get write at your leisure and if you get enough page views they do pay you, albeit not much ($6-8 for every 1,000 page views).

Good luck to you. Writing is something I enjoy also and would like to get into freelancing. Hope you have great success with it.
