    Re: Basketball Advice

Work on that finish, that's all I can say. Improving my follow-through was the one thing that helped me drain more buckets in basketball. I don't know what the technical things were that was allowing me to make less shots before that, but afterward I was a 3 pt machine (relatively).

I honestly think that I haven't played as bad as I have in the past three days in a long time. Tryouts are Tuesday and Wednesday by the way.
If possible, the first thing I always do when I walk in a gym is start shooting from about 2 feet out. I make sure the ball is on (and coming off of) my finger tips with proper follow through. I take about 5 shots from the front (assuming everything is good... more if it's a bit off) and each side. Then I take bank shots from each side about 5 feet out. Then I take shots from the center of the key, then I MAKE at least 10 foul shots in a row. In your situation I'd probably take more foul shots, but again, focusing on my form more than actually making the shot.

From there, if you can get a partner like mentioned, that'd be great, but practice 2 different ways. One is focusing only on your form. Make or miss, try to feel your form being perfect. Are you following through? Are you going UP with the shot and not forward? Are you jumping? Is your elbow in? Etc. Take your time during this part and really try to feel every element of the shot. If you do this long enough, later on it'll be easier to identify what you're doing wrong.

Second, you want to shoot at game speed and ONLY try to make it. Pick one or two spots at a time and shoot a good 10 to 20 (or more) from the same spot(s). I usually start elbow to elbow and then move around, eventually going to each of the 5 points behind the 3 point line and making 5 to 10 in a row before moving on (depending on how my shot is that day). If you don't have a partner, either take 2 hard dribbles to the spot to shoot every time, or spin the ball out in front of you and get it off the bounce at game speed. But remember, this is not the time to work on your form, this is the time for muscle memory. Just get the ball and fire.

You may want to go back and forth between these two depending on how jacked your shot is while doing it. May not be enough before your tryouts (start today?) but should help going forward. During your tryouts and pick up games, just be more selective in your shots but if you're going to shoot, just shoot it. If you think about it you've already missed. And usually, it's more important to take the right shot than to make every one you take anyway.

If I were to ask the coach if he or any of his assistants could rebound for me at lunch tomorrow and I said I could pay whoever does it $5 would it be considered rude since they are coaches and not just some random kids. I thought having a coach do it could let them see if anything's wrong with my form.

I'm not sure if I follow exactly what you're possibly asking. Are you saying you're looking to pay a coach $5 to rebound for you at lunch? Or are you saying you wouldn't do that because it'd be rude?

Either way, I don't know your coaches, but I don't usually have time at lunch to be rebounding in the gym for someone while they shoot. I'm actually eating lunch and whatnot. But maybe at your school there's those 15 minutes after people eat and everyone's gathered in the gym just fooling around. I don't know how it works there. I'd say it wouldn't be a bad idea to somehow see if a coach can help you with your shot. Here, the opportunity to help someone's form comes during open gyms or during a basketball class during the school day. And I'm always willing to help when I have time. It'd just be a little weird if a random student offered me $5 to help him during lunch.

Even tryouts are coachable moments to me. I don't look at them as coach-free performances. If a player can be doing something more efficiently, or needs help with his shot, or asks what he needs to work on, I'm definitely still helping out.

I know I'm late but please don't offer a coach money. I don't even think that's legal. Just ask them, if they have time they should be happy to help. If you want to pay a buddy to rebound that'd be different.

I didn't offer to pay them since it seemed to be a really bad idea. I didn't ask at all actually since some people thought it just wouldn't look right (the whole idea).

                        I didn't make it

Those were all of the emotions I felt after not making it. When I saw who made it and who didn't it was really hysterical. The guy that made varsity (5'7, no handles, no hops, no shot, so cocky its not even funny) was cussing out his teammates after he made a bad pass(every time he passed pretty much) and he missed almost every shot he took. When I asked the coach why I didn't make any team he said it was a "number's issue" but in my mind I thought well you could have just bumped that kid that made varsity off and re-done the teams that way. There were some other kids that made JV and varsity (two freshman) that I think the coach has overrated a little bit too. Ah well just gotta get better but even some of my harshest critics (other coaches not related to high school) were pretty shocked I didn't make it.

Gotta put my head down and keep working and show them they were wrong but I truly wonder how unless I can go in there dunking there what else I need to do. I know I can play at the varsity level I just don't know how to get the chance. Sorry if it sounds like I'm some spoiled diva who thinks I'm entitled to something I just get frustrated thinking about what happens at that school.

Thanks for all the help. Maybe I should just transfer schools but there's no way to be able to tell if I'll have the same problem.

I wish I had the resources to donate. I'd much rather get the shooting drill videos that I want. Meh, I like my user name though. Unless someone else is eyeing it?
