Please point me in the right direction...

Next spring I am going to be playing in a national adult contact football league and the position I will be competing for is QB

As many of you know, I've stated I was a pitcher in college so my arm strength is there. I am having one heck of a time throwing a "good ball" with regards to a tight spiral. It is very inconsistent and I need to find some way to improve this area.

The issue is with my short/intermediate passes as my 20+ yard passes spiral just fine.

Do any of you have resources that would help? I know we have some football coaches here and former players...although not many have stated they were QBs.

If you don't mind me asking, what league/team will you be in? If you don't want to say which one, I perfectly understand. I just find stuff like this cool.

Unfortunately, being 5'4-5'4, skinny, and in High School, I can't really give you any advice.

I feel your pain. I played baseball the majority of my life too, it's hard to fight the urge not to throw the football like a baseball..lol.... I would say just concentrate on your motion and release. For a while focus more on feeling the ball come off the finger tips and not on how far or hard your throwing. Since you're athletic it wont take long.

I know one just like any other sport is consistency, gotta find the release point and motion right then get it down over and over.
Like previously said the ball should be coming off your fingertips last I believe the index finger should be the last.

I've been playing football awhile and still can't throw a good ball as I never really played catch as a kid lol

Maybe try to get to know your recievers and form a connection?

I think his issue is more of a mechanical one (an issue for which I have no solution).

A google search of "football passing mechanics" gives a lot of info. I played baseball as well and can't throw a football more than 30 yards with a spiral so I understand your dilemma.

It's interesting that you throw the deep ball better than short-intermediate passes. That makes me think that you're cutting yourself off when you throw short passes (like many pitchers do with curveballs) and aren't fully pronating through release. Maybe concentrate on finishing the throw with full extension and pronation and making sure your throwing hand gets past your opposite hip (right hand finishes down past your left hip if you're right handed).

                  I appreciate it

However after reading that response I've decided I'm more of a visual learner so I guess I'll just search for instructional vids.

I heard the team is getting a coach from the Arena league so hopefully he can mold me into a decent thrower. I just want to gain some knowledge of throwing prior to workouts.

In all honesty though, I had the same struggle. I played baseball (pitcher) through college and then last year (because I pitched) I was asked to be the QB of a flag football team.

For me, it was just more repetition than anything. After a few days, my spiral was much improved. One thing that also helped me was something that helped me a bit as a pitcher.

On days when I had trouble getting on top of a curveball and getting a nice tight spin on the ball, I would short arm a few and release the ball closer to my ear instead of out from my shoulder. This could force me to get outside and on top of the ball to generate a tighter spin...the same thing helped me with the football. If I threw a few ducks, I would release the next few closer and it would help me get outside the ball.

It's funny though, as a former baseball player, it shows up every where. When I play golf with someone new, they almost instantly ask if I played baseball.

All I can say is that you throw a football using your shoulder, while in baseball you're throwing more with your arm.

I've found that if I try to put too much into a throw, it usually ends up ugly.

Otherwise, just repetition to get acclimated to the change of motion.

Unfotrunately, I know little about playing QB. However, I have noticed that a great connection (Like Kyle Orton - Brandon Lloyd Last year) can make up for having only mediocre skill at a position/specific part of a position (Arm Strength/Consistency for Orton/Lloyd, Respectively)

Searched How to throw a spiral and got this. Good pick of a proper grip, hope it helps.

Everyone wants to play quarterback and a tight spiral is the key to becoming the team MVP.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Having played both football and baseball, I also found that I had to get into the "mode" for each sport... meaning if both seasons ran simultaneously, I would be terrible at throwing both. I definitely agree that with a football, it is more of a shoulder powered throw, as opposed to more arm when throwing a baseball. Grip is very important when throwing a football, as is the motion (controlled), and release. I always tended to make my football throw release, roll off of my hand, starting with the ring finger, and using my index finger as my "aim or drawing" finger (if that makes sense) - as a baseball player first, I usually found myself gripping the football a little further back than normal (which is probably not recommended, but it worked for me.) Overall, I think if you continually work on your grip and motion, it will eventually become second nature... that is until you start throwing a baseball again

                            Good luck in your pursuit.

I was a QB and routinely could throw the ball on a rope 65 yards... Short and intermediate passes are tough. Your grip is a lot of it. I put my middle finger and thumb lined up with the ring. The other fingers are used in the seams. I am gripping a football as we speak (taking breaks to type) and the grip has to feel right. On my follow through, the ball is also very close to my ear.

I had some mechanical issues, but man, it really just comes down to reps. Throw as much as you can, even if you're throwing into an open field and have to go track down the ball. You'll eventually find what works, and being a former pitcher, you know your arm strength is solid. I think the biggest challenge for you will be overcoming the issue of trying to throw the pigskin like a baseball. It's two completely different things.
