    Re: What is YOUR Career?

I'm 24 and still have no idea what I want to do for a career. And i know one thing is for sure I don't want to be working a grocery store the rest of my life.

Oh, and this was true for me and I think for many college students, maybe 2% of the total gain you get professionally and socially will come from the classes. The rest will come from things like internships, campus groups and opportunities, and the friendships/connections you will make.

LOL, sorry. I was a sophomore attending Newton Senior High School in Newton, IA

Not sure I was very useful for anything 10 years ago.

I'm an Electrical Engineering major and I would recommend an extremely difficult degree like that or pre-med or bio-chem.

BS in Accounting (2003), and became a CPA in 2005.

I would highly recommend the accounting profession. As someone mentioned earlier, the possibilities are endless. Is it as exciting as being a sports reporter, or broadcaster? Probably not, but I feel pretty comfortable that even in down economic times, I should be able to land a job somewhere. Just to give you an idea of career progression, I started out in Public Accounting, and then transitioned to a private company. I'm currently an Manager at a software company.

If you like numbers (don't sweat it if you're not great at calc or any advanced math - it's really not needed), and enjoy puzzles and challenges, accounting might be the right profession for you.

you need to decide whether you want to major in a subject that you like or major in a subject thats needed. For an example, I want to major in journalism but due to the shrinkage of print media and the fact that they get paid a god awful salary i will probably major in accounting.

It doesn't have to be so cut and dry. Why not major in marketing or PR? There is plenty of writing/research involved in those fields, just like in journalism, but the job market is much better since the industry isn't a dying one.

You obviously don't know much about journalism if you believe that. Yes, print media is dying, but who do you think writes everything you see online? If you're still worried, double major in Graphic Design or Public Relations (what I did) and build your portfolio. Sell yourself.

Also, if you want to be a successful journalist you have to search out the opportunities, they won't just fall in your lap. Take risks and you'll be rewarded.

It doesnt matter what you do in life you can help people in whatever you do. Other jobs give you more opproutnites than others but, it is how you go about your job and the passion you show.

I actually really enjoy my job

I worked in finance about 8 months and was laid off, LIFO style. I am rather happy for that

I'm a lawyer by education, but working in the sports biz, which generally means I do a whole lot of stuff outside of my education too. Anything from contract negotiations to marketing and pr, and other kinds of ill ****.

It's a fun job though, so can't complain.

I don't really agree. Yes, print media is dying, but that just means a new media is coming around. Look at this website, as an example.

If you get yourself some skills at making visual presentations, etc, you'd do well.

I don't want to get into too much details about my work, but whenever we look for PR / Marketing people, we're more likely to look for someone with web-media experience than printed media experience.
