Re: What is YOUR Career?
In high school, I always saw myself playing basketball at Syracuse after my dad took me to a few games in 2003. I ended up realizing that wasn't going to happen for a couple reasons (turned down starting for one of the best teams in my area to ride the pine for one of the worst teams just out of loyalty, flat out didn't make the most of my abilities). Anyways, I ended up finishing 9th in my class of 255 and applied to some schools from around here (Buffalo, Albany) and applied to Syracuse just because it had always been my dream school even though there was no way my family could come remotely close to affording it. I ended up deciding I was going to Albany until one day while I was out with my friends my mom called me and was literally sobbing on the phone. Apparently I had gotten accepted into the Whitman school at Syracuse and moreover, they were going to pay the entire tuition every year.
Ive never been positive of what I want to do with my life because I have a knack for being able to pick pretty much anything up very quickly, but I'm now double majoring in Finance and Marketing and might minor in Philosophy just because it's fascinating to me. Still not sure what I want to do for a career, but I picture myself becoming an actuary, financial analyst, or possibly something to do with marketing. At the moment however, I'm working as a bank teller and just kinda learning about how banks work and all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes.
Being able to go to Syracuse and not be scared of loans afterwards at all has been an absolute dream come true for me. While everyone else from my high school usually either goes to community college or no college whatsoever, I've been blessed with an amazing opportunity here.Last edited by Yeah...THAT Guy; 03-11-2012, 12:29 AM.NFL: Bills

Re: What is YOUR Career?
Music producer/songwriter. It started off as a "side job" while I was working towards my Finance degree at Concordia University in Montreal, then it just picked up. Looking back, five years later, leaving school to pursue this career was one of the best decisions I ever made. A risky one, but thankfully it paid off! (I've seen too many friends/family crash and burn in the music industry)Comment

Own my own Video Production LLC (I freelance through it, only employee)
I travel around the country and sometimes out of the country setting up the video segments of live shows (LED screens, 20K projectors, 600' screens, the big stuff) of mostly corporate shows. I do press event for E3 (Nintendo, Microsoft, etc for example.
I travel alot and have a kid on the way but I love being on the road, have made some great friends and we know how to work hard and play hard.
Plus, I work waaaay better hours than my staff brethren. Just a little more work getting shows, but well worth it with the time off I get if I feel like it.

Re: What is YOUR Career?
I work in corrections and feel that it's definitely NOT my career... Yet, anyway (if ever).
It's a good enough job and I work with some amazing people. I've definitely made some lifelong friends. But the job satisfaction is severely lacking at times. Then again, most of the time I feel that I don't need much job satisfaction. This is going to sound really crass, but sometimes I just feel it's a paycheck and nothing more. My career, and what's important to me, is being a husband and a father to my son and (son/daughter on the way - we find out tomorrow!).
I hope my tune changes with that, but it's how I feel. For some, a successful career is extremely important and I would say that's good. It should be a big priority. But, for me, if I can put a roof over my family's head, food on the table, and clothes on their back? That's all that matters. Maybe I'll make enough over my "career" to put some cash away for their college education. I hope so, and I hope at some point, I find some more satisfaction in what I do, but as of right now, it's just not that important. I am blessed and thankful for my job, but it's just a job.
I have actually been kicking around the idea of nursing school. I doubt that will go anywhere, but it might. With my dad's recent ordeal, I just kind of felt drawn to that. The money is good and most hospitals work 12-hour shifts so the time with my family would be great. I am planning on looking into it some more, so we will see what happens.
Sorry... I know this was kind of a lame post, but I thought I'd add my .02.
EDIT: Where my passion and desire lies is in writing. I feel like I could write books, but don't know if I could actually make a living doing it. It will be something that I do on the side to hopefully supplement by normal income.Comment

I'm a high school Geography teacher that relocated to England for job purposes four years ago. It has been great living in Europe but am looking to explore teaching options in the Middle East/Asia.Comment

Re: What is YOUR Career?
There are so many activities around the Seattle area. Tons of hiking and biking trails, camping in the mountains, lakes for boating, and skiing/snowboarding is an hour away. For sports, you have Mariners, Seahawks, Storm (I know...), and Sounders MLS. I actually am not a huge soccer fan but the games are incredibly fun to go to. The Mariners Single-A and Triple-A teams are both about a 1/2-1 hour away from Seattle. The food here is fantastic and there are tons of bars, pubs, and breweries around the area.
I'm definitely a country kid, grew in a small rural farming town, so as I get older I might be more inclined to move out into the rural areas of the state. Right now though, being in my late-20's, it's an awesome place to live.
Any other questions just ask.Comment

Re: What is YOUR Career?
I love it personally. There is so much to do here it's incredible. Sure, it rains and is overcast quite a few days out of the year, but when it's nice outside there is no better place to be. Summer days when you're sitting at a restaurant on the water having a beer and some great seafood, not much is better than that. The traffic is so-so, similar to most cities I'd imagine. We actually live in Redmond, which is about 10 miles northeast of Seattle.

Damn, all of that sounds awesome. We'd likely end up living in a townhome close to the hospital she'd be doing her residency. All of that stuff is definitely appealing. I'm more of an outdoors person so the hiking in the mountains is definitely a huge plus. Also love the idea of living in a city with a professional baseball team.Twitter
