GMAT

Anybody take it recently? I'm scheduled to take it on the 5th of November, and just want to know what to expect.

I have a prep book and plan on doing the practice tests sometime this weekend, but would like some real world opinions.

Took it 5 years ago and passed it with like 430 without a second of studying. Took it last minute. I can tell you when I took the GRE the next week under the same no study conditions, the ZrE was ten times easier.

I took it about a year and a half ago. I studied my *** off using that prep book, did all the practice exams in the book, and did other additional practice tests online. When I took it it was a little nerve wracking because of the time constraints but the studying paid off. Scored a 630. Best advice I can give is take the time to go through the book, learn the tips and take multiple practice tests. When do you take the real thing?

I took this a couple of months ago. I did really well on the reading portion, but the math portion was difficult for me. It's been a very long time since I took algebra and geometry, so make sure you at least review the basics of that.

I'm sorry, but what school accepted a 430? I scored a 510, but I still need a 560 to get into McCombs.

Which book did you use mburke?

Kaplan GMAT Premier Live Online 2010 Edition. It's a physical book but it has online access for practice tests and such. When I went to a grad school information session at my alma mater they gave them away for free.

Several schools I looked into only required a 400, as long as you had a good GPA.

That's what mine was. Score sucked but GPA was fine. Switched schools any way and needed GRE and did fine on that. GMAT is much tougher.

I second this, especially the practice exams online. I took the exam in 2008. Twice actually. The first time I started studying several weeks in advance just about every night going through a Princeton Review study book. I took the exam on a Thursday morning. Choked on the first math problem and I was screwed mentally. Ended up with a 510. I was so ticked off about letting that exam beat me and signed up again the very next day for an exam two months later. Never studied for that one until the night before, which just involved reviewing some of the math tips in the study book. I took the exam on a Saturday morning. Knowing I had the 510 in my back pocket, I was much more relaxed. Scored a 630, which is what I expected to do the first time. So, yeah, I paid an extra $250 to boost my ego. Wanna fight about it?

Got my unofficial score. 600. For winging it, for the most part, I am content. However, feel like I could have done better, especially on the quantitative section.

I'm debating now whether to take it again or not.

That's awesome man! Congrats! That will get you into pretty much any B-School of your choice.

Congrats, brother! 600 is a great score. Depending on where you want to go, that should be plenty for most schools. I think if you were looking at some of the upper-tier schools like Vandy, Northwestern, Penn, etc., you might need something higher. When I was checking into schools a few years back, I think on average Vandy was a 660 or so. Wake Forest was about 600 and they have a good program. If I had any balls, I'd have packed up and moved to Winston-Salem to go to Wake or tried to get into Vandy. Xavier worked out best for my situation. They have a really good program. I enjoyed my time there.
