There's another one of these on another forum and it's 50/50. And even "experts" have reasons for it being one way or the other - so I don't think anyone is looking dumb. It's just a poorly written equation.

This is why you use brackets.

Is it asking:

(40+40)x(0+1)?
40+(40x0)+1?
(40+40)x0+1?
40+40x(0+1)

It's just poorly written and purposely designed to make people 'look awfully dumb'.

As a mathematical rule, parentheses are not required for any equation, even this one. The equation is what it is, adding brackets somewhere makes it a completely different equation with a different answer. In no way is the equation "wrong" as it is currently written. The answer is 41.

Can't believe I missed this. After getting through Calc I and II with all the order of operations entailed with derivatives, I feel dumb. (And since I'm majoring in finance)

It's poorly written - simple as that.

That's why parenthesis exist.

It's not poorly written, its a basic equation. You don't need parentheses to solve it either, thats what order of operation is for.

There is only one answer, there is no possible way for it to be anything else other than 41

I think it's funny that the thread title gives you the answer but it's not a listed option.

The equation is written confusingly, as evidenced by so many people getting it wrong, smart and dumb alike. It gives the bare minimum. I think it also depends on how you were taught in school too. Some teachers would insist you used parentheses, while others were more lax.

Alas, math sucks.

cotangent is the reciprocal of tangent, cosecant is the reciprocal of sine, and secant is reciprocal of cosine.
