 Re: Off Topic 2012

Someone want to help me out a bit... I'm trying to get into some bands and was wondering if you all wanted to throw some names and songs out there?

Here's a list of some bands people have mentioned to me. Some I have heard of, some I haven't... I just don't know really where to start. I hate to pick random songs and dislike them and those end up being the bands worse songs or something. Thanks in advance.

 My Chemical Romance
 Disturbed
 System of a down
 Bullet for My Valentine
 36 crazy fists
 Raveonettes
 My Morning Jacket
 White stripes
 The Black Keys
 Modest Mouse
 Arcade FireComment

Raveonettes - haven't heard their songs
My Morning Jacket - all of it

Honestly, what you should do is get on Spotify - you can listen to any songs by these bands that you want to on there.Comment

Everyone should have Spotify (or one of the other similar services). The free client is good, but getting Premium so you can have it on your iPod or phone is incredible. There's hardly a minute of the day when I'm not listening to music now.Ryan Spencer

 Re: Off Topic 2012

My Morning Jacket - A really good band that has its basis in alt. country-rock, but builds upon that with some spacey surf rock. I love their early stuff as I'm more of a "roots rock guy", but their more masterful pop album Z is their pinnacle. Anything from Z backwards is worth buying.

White Stripes - I'm not gonna lie, I'm a total homer. The last two albums aren't as good as the rest of their stuff, but its still worth checking out. I'd start from the beginning and go from there. They remind me of CCR with their simplicity, but there's still a lot going on both musically and lyrically. Going on the Jack White train also check out The Raconteurs and Dead Weather.

The Black Keys - A bit more straight up blues than the White Stripes, they have a more traditional basis and influences are a bit more apparent ranging from CCR to Junior Kimbrough. Their early albums (up through Rubber Factory) has a really cool, mid-fi muddy production to their sound that gives their sound a cool, fuzzy edge. Brothers is probably their most rounded and arguably their best, but my favorite album is Thickfreakness with Rubber Factory a very close second. Dan Auerbach's solo album is also worth checking out.

Modest Mouse - This band is a bit more quirky and one I typically file under "indie rock" because I have no idea what else to call their style. Most of their influence seems to stem from the Pixies and that type of 80s college/indie surf-rock style. I would start with their most recent stuff and work your way back. Their early stuff isn't as listener-friendly as their more straight-laced, pop oriented stuff of recent years. My personal favorite is The Moon and Antarctica, but Lonesome Crowded West is equally as wonderful while building a completely different style and tone.

Arcade Fire - A bit more of the 80s pop than Modest Mouse, another band I consider just indie rock. I'm not as big of a fan of them as the rest of the music world, but they're worth checking out even if they can be a bit repetitive with their anthem build ups.

I'm gonna throw some bands based off this list you might enjoy:

Free Energy - Just straight up 70s arenas rock filtered through modern indie rock. A really fun band.

Japandroids - Another duo like The Black Keys and The White Stripes, but they're straight up rock n roll with some classic (rock) punk tendencies.

Heartless Bastards - Riff-rhythm rock at its best. They're comparable sound wise to the Black Keys (both have covered Junior Kimbrough), but they also seem to channel some Led Zeppelin in their grooves and jams.

 Re: Off Topic 2012

I'm a System of a Down expert. Do you like heavier music? More melodic?

My favorite album from them top-to-bottom is probably "Steal This Album!", but they're all awesome in their own way. Their earliest album (self-titled) is easily their heaviest. Toxicity has a lot of their popular songs. I think the weakest is Mezmerize.

As for the White Stripes....anything with "White Stripes" is gold. Some of the first songs to come to mind are Screwdriver, Little Cream Soda, Apple Blossom, and I Think I Smell A Rat. So much greatness though.Comment

I got the job with AT&T! I'm so excited. It's way more money than I need at this point in my life, and it's part time and fits perfectly with my school schedule.Kansas City Royals | FC Barcelona | New Orleans Pelicans

 Re: Off Topic 2012

It's called a National Retail Field Representative. I'm going to work in several stores, in this case Best Buy, Walmart, and Sam's Club, supporting AT&T. So I'll help train the cell phone departments, solve problems for them, help them sell when they're busy, etc. In this case, I'll be assigned a section of the city to work in. I'm not sure which one, but I know it'll either be up north (Liberty-Zona Rosa), Overland Park/Olathe, the Legends area, or Independence. I'm hoping for up north because that's where I live, but I'd be plenty happy with any of them. It's no more than a 30-40 minute drive for me.Kansas City Royals | FC Barcelona | New Orleans Pelicans

That was like the anti-Giggas post. Congrats, Cabke.

SpoilerIf you were equally as happy about something kind of mundane and material it would have been the Anti-JJ post.

 Good ish Cabke.

I got myself an interview lined up on Friday morning for a marketing/office job. If the money is right, the opportunity is one I don't want to pass up. Got an inside track but no real experience (though the "help wanted post" specifically said that doesn't matter), so I'm excited but still nervous.

In negative news, gotta pay a little bit of money for a class I'm not taking. But I'll take the hit now, learn from this mistake, and do it right fall semester.

Always moving ahead... Never looking behind. And other assorted cliches.

 Anyway...
Is GIGGAS there yet?NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
