Re: Off Topic 2012
FRAT Warning. Sorry about the length.
This has been an annoying couple of days. I wrote about this a bit in the HDMI thread, but I still felt the need to vent. Anyway...
1. The HDTV that I've had for about five years finally gave out on me. It's been messed up for a while, but I rode it out for as long as I could because I loved the set so much. It would blink for a good two or three minutes every time I turned it on, but eventually the picture would come in. This time though, the blinking wouldn't stop. When I turned the television off to try and give it another shot the damn thing wouldn't come on at all. I went out to Walmart to look for a cheap replacement.
2. When I got to Walmart I settled on an Emerson that looked pretty good in the store. Unfortunately, the unit that I brought home with me was a piece of trash. The color kept cutting in and out and it had problems reading both my HDMI and component cables. I played around with the settings for two days and there was nothing I could do to improve the quality. I finally decided it was a dud, boxed it up and returned it to Walmart this afternoon.
3. After being burned by the Emerson, I decided to use my money elsewhere. Still looking for a deal, I saw online that Comp USA/Tiger Direct was offering refurbished Vizio's for a pretty nice price. They were highly rated and seemed like it could probably fit my needs. It looked good in the store, so I bit the bullet and brought it home with me. Once I got home and got everything hooked up I was pretty pleased with my purchase. Unfortunately, that didn't last very long. No more than 3 minutes after hooking it up, the screen went white and the television let off a loud screeching noise. Oh boy.
I quickly turned off the television and attempted to restart it, but it wouldn't budge. After about 15 or 20 seconds of pressing the power button it finally responded and turned back on again. I tried to tell myself that what had happened was just a freak occurrence, but when it happened two more times I knew that I had another dud. I should've learned from my past mistakes with Xbox 360's that buying refurbished electronics isn't really a good idea. New is the way to go. I boxed up the television and returned it to the store.
4. Since getting another refurbished unit was out of the question for me, I decided to head back to Walmart to get another television. When I was browsing their website earlier in the day, I remembered that they had a similar Vizio to the one I had just purchased. Since I liked the quality that I briefly experienced earlier with that brand, I went back to the store and purchased it. I now have it hooked up and the quality is great. It's only a 32 inch/780p set, but it's fine for what I need right now. I just hope this thing holds up because I really don't feel like lugging another tv back to the store.Comment

Anyways, I don't know if you guys remember me posting about my moms basement being flooded because her sump pump was damaged when they she had her back yard fenced in? Well, turns out it was no accident. It seems the fence company actually cut out a 6-8 inch section of the pipe to install the fence post. They never bothered to see if the pipe was connected to something or ask if it was for something and never bothered to tell my mom about it. The insurace guy estimated about $8200 in damage in the basement and they'll pay $5000. My mom will be paying a vist to Allegheny Fence (the company who installed the fence) next week and they damn well better foot the rest of that bill. Unbelievable that they would cut a pipe without even checking to see if it was for something and not even telling my mom about it.
As for my baseball cards and sports illustrated, some of the magazines are wet but are slowly drying. And I need to thank my grandma again for all the plastic baseball card cases she got me when I was collecting cards as almost all of the cards in the box that got wet were in those plastic cases. About 10 cards on one of of the box containing my complete set of 1988 Donruss got damaged/ruined, but most of the set is fine. The box containining a near complete set of 92 Fleer Ultra Series 1 was a bit damp and the cards were all stuck together, but I think that was more from having them wedged in the box way to tight. Finally the box for my 89 Score complete set was a bit damp, but the cards inside were untouched.Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII
