I learned today that most pick up basketball players are soft, can't handle and don't want contact.

Got into a fight with a kid cause of it, kept saying I was fouling him all day when he'd post up and i'd just do to this:

Being a former defensive football player I relish contact so a majority of my focus is on defense and boxing out, although I have no problem with taking some shot or driving if I have to. I know my role, my 2 best buds I usually roll with are usually the best offensive players on the court.

Blocked him on a fast break from behind and he called foul even tho I got all ball, everyone really disagrees but I just stay quiet and keep playing. Next time on offense my friend shoots a 3, I go for the box out and just drive him all the way back near the foul line. He starts to get in my face and I admittedly kind of started the fight cause I then said just shut up and man up. He didn't like that and threw a punch and then it went all downhill from there for a few seconds before people pulled us apart.

Although I honestly believe you think you did nothing wrong, I do think you know that you escalated the situation especially when you said "admittedly (I) kind of started the fight".

I believe you are extremely competitive, and just wanted to challenge these guys however you are right pick up guys at a playground or park court are not used to any "extra" contact that is not incidental and are not expecting a physical game.

I probably would have toned down the physicality after the Blocked shot, which he cried foul for. If you are looking to play a more physical paced style I would probably let the players know before hand you guys are going to go 100% from the get go so everyone knows what they can expect and if they don't want to play that way they can go to another court, or you can join some kind of more organized league.
