Re: Off Topic 2012
Yeah it's a complicated thing, I think depends on the illness/severity/age. With something like Blood pressure at that young age it probably is best to take the route you did first.
On Flonase right now for awhile because apparently the slightly broken nose I received last summer made my nose slightly deviated which caused constant inflammation leading to a lot of mucus, etc. Also on zantac because my Dr. think I'm having a problem with gastritis/possible GERD, but not so sure anymore luckily the medicine kind of actually helps with the heartburn I sometimes get and doesn't seem to have too many side effects(I have changed my diet, just hard to go on a full out change to see)
Think I need to go back as I'm having a sharp pain still in my chest near my heart that lasts barely a second every now and then, read/heard it could be a chest wall infection or something instead.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Re: Off Topic 2012
Sadly that is very true. I know so many parents around me who got their kids on all kinds of pills just because the doctor SAID they need it. They don't even question it at all.
Kind of reminds me of how I see so many former and current military people getting the lap band operation for they can lose weight. And why ? Because the VA pays for it. All you have to be is over 200 pounds, attend a class for 3 months, one day out of the month and you qualify for it.

Nexium is a miracle medicine. I've had acid reflux issues for years but I started taking it and it helps big time.
Right now I'm on a Z-Pack because of my sinus infection. Again, another miracle.Last edited by TheMatrix31; 05-24-2012, 10:08 PM.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2012
When it's something like blood pressure, I can see why they'd prescribe the drugs. The doctor is still going to tell you to lose the weight, etc. and after you've done that, take you back off the drugs. But in the meantime, while you're losing the weight, the blood pressure medicine is taking some stress off your heart, which can help you down the road. I know I need to lose weight (and I have been), but if a doctor was to prescribe blood pressure medication, I'd have no problem taking it, for the time being. Luckily, even though my weight is way too high, my blood pressure is still okay.
Now, if it came to anxiety medication, or anti-depressants, or something like that, I don't think I'd be comfortable at all taking those. I don't want to take anything that messes with my brain. So far in my life, I've even been able to avoid taking narcotic pain killers the two or three times they've been prescribed (I one time got prescribed pain killers for a broken finger after I told them the pain level was a 3 or 4 and that the only reason I came in is that is had swelled too much for me to be able to do anything).Comment

Re: Off Topic 2012
I had to quit taking meds for acid reflux, they all give me heart palpitations. Another thing that doesn't work well with anxiety.
Since I lost 30 pounds however I don't suffer nearly as much as I used to. Though I still keep tums at my bed and desk.
Edit:
Anxiety: I never in my 36 years suffered from anxiety. Then one day outta the blue it hit me. And hit me hard. It literally came outta nowhere. I never would have never thought it would ever be an issue. But low and behold.Last edited by Chef Matt; 05-24-2012, 10:20 PM.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon. Re: Off Topic 2012
I don't officially have any anxiety problems, but it's something I sometime just have problems with as of late if I think something serious is going on when there usually is nothing. Seemingly started last Valentine's Day as I was slightly depressed for some reason, then just got a bad case like I thought I was having a heart attack or something and it kept me up until like 7 am.
I'm not overweight, but I can probably lose 10-15 pounds so working on that to see as there are blood pressure problems in my family and see if it helps my acid reflux problems. Nothing seriously wrong with my body, but despite all the health, etc. class I was forced to sit through it wasn't until this past year I learned how important it's gonna be to take care of my body.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

My dad thought I was imbalanced because I'm laid back about everything. I don't get mad, yell, or show interest in things. But I'm not an emotional person. I saw a therapists and she said I have alexithymia which means I don't have the full range of emotions. Its a form of autism. But I also supress all of my emotions as well.

Re: Off Topic 2012
My sister has been taking blood pressure medication, since she was my age. She's not overweight or unhealthy.. it's really just hereditary.
I get myself checked once a year, because my mother has had lupus for close to 22 years. She, along with my grandparents, and uncles also have blood pressure problems.
My family has fought heart problems, blood pressure, and other **** for a long time now. That's part of the reason I make damn sure I'm in the gym at least 4 days a week.
I started taking an over the counter acid reducer and I don't really have much heartburn, anymore. For several months it was a thorn in my side and I was convinced I had a mild case of acid reflux.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2012
You know, my Dad actually has problems with heart palpitations too. Didn't realize acid-reflux medication could cause that. He's been on that stuff for years. He has sever acid-reflux. Actually had to have surgery to repair a hiatal hernia several years back, lost probably 40-50 lbs due to that (it makes it so you can't eat much, like gastric bypass surgeries), and then gained it back since the doctor essentially told him he can't exercise hard because of the palpitations. It sucks, since he used to ride a bicycle all the time. Used to do races, and now there's a bike that cost $2000 just laying in the garage (it's too small for me, or I'd take it in a heart beat).Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon. I think part of it is I saw how my family was growing up. Always yelling and screaming and I always made it a point to be opposite of that. My wife yells and I hate that. I tune people out that yell. Hopefully my kids will learn that yelling only makes things worse, makes a stressful time more stressful.

Re: Off Topic 2012
I'm surprised that's considered a form of autism. Seems like a personality trait, but I'm no expert. Then again, I'm the same guy that doesn't believe in bipolar disorder (and have been diagnosed)
