Here's my big problem with the story. Did they really need to have a dramatization/reenactment showing her holding the shotgun? A little over the top.

These sort of stories of people killing intruders always tend to be like this, very over the top, but the ones where a family member is killed accidentally is buried in the back page news. Here's a link to study about gun ownership. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8371731
Not trying to start a political fight, just a fact that guns are much more likely to be used on someone you know rather than a random intruder.

Let's face it. This story is a bit different than run of the mill. This is an 18 y.o. And this is an 18 y.o. with a 3 mo. old child at home alone.

Then you compare it to "a family member killed accidentally", but point to a link speaking to homicide. And a homicide study that points out the key factor of illicit drugs probably being a strong influence. You're really reaching.

This is like pointing out how more automobile accidents occur closer to one's home. Of course they do. You spend the majority of your time driving around there.

How many random intruder stories are there comparatively, really.

Going to watch the video now, but is it extremely different from the Joe Horn story?

EDIT: Yup, pretty different, but I'm still surprised how one is completely sanctioned and the other is ridiculed.

Hopefully her lucks turns around and it's nice she is getting some community support.
And thankfully she owned (or had a gun available) to protect herself and child.

Yes, this study wasn't about accidental deaths, but how about the last line of the results from the abstract?

"Virtually all of this risk involved homicide by a family member or intimate acquaintance."

My point is that if you own a gun, it is exceedingly rare you would use it in the situation portrayed. Just trying to add some reality to the sensationalized story. You certainly don't see suicide stories (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?t...20case%20study). That's all. I support the use of handguns, as long as they are responsibly used and stored properly.

I'm no Jonny Cochran by any stretch of the imagination, but this seems like clear-cut self defense. Even with our messed up legal system, I don't see how 12 jury members could side with the victim's families.

She can't be charged. A lot of states have laws that say you can do anything to stop an intruder once they are in your house and some say on your property.

Exactly, even if she could be charged, there is no way a jury would even consider charging a young mother protecting herself and her child, no way.

Well, apparently that was up to her when the media showed up and asked her to re-enact it. She could have said no. Maybe it was her way to help with working through it. How do we know?

Yeah I don't know, and I didn't think she was forced into standing there with a gun for a video. I just found the video to be weird, usually we see re-enactments from an actor.
