Help Regarding Getting Car Fixed For Trip Across Country

Going to get straight to it.

I'm driving from Miami to California. I have a 2006 Nissan Altima with 60000 miles. I know nothing about cars.

In preparation for the trip, what are the most important things to have done/checked on for my car. I don't want them telling me a whole bunch of stuff that I don't necessarily need right now. Just the important stuff.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated fellas.

I don't know anything about cars either, but I'd imagine your battery, oil, tires/tire pressure for sure.

Have you had any prior work done on your car before?

A full tank (or five) of gas, an oil change and a good tire rotation. You shouldn't have any real mechanical issues at 60k miles.

Good advice here so far, Magic. Get an oil change service and make sure all fluids/coolant/transmission fluid etc are all ok, tires ok and proper inflation, air and fuel filters ok, belt ok. Tune up probably not a bad idea but if she's running smooth that can wait if funds don't allow. Think of it as a really good leg-stretch for your car, but clean fluids are a must for that much running.

Don't forget a roadside emergency kit with road flares, jumper cables, fix a flat, make sure your spare has air in it. And if your driving through the desert make sure you have a gallon of water for drinking in case you do break down there.

Even tho you probably have GPS a roadmap is always good. Check all fluids, rotate tires. Just the more common sense stuff. If you can see it, check it is what I always say.

Great point....I'd pick up a good atlas so you know where you are at all along the way and what's around you. Don't rely 100% on GPS! (recalculating).

Na. I just got the car a little over a year ago.

Thanks for all the advice fellas.

I had the oil changed at one place, then took it to another place to a guy I know. He said that the oil was bad. Is there anything I could do to get my money back from the other place?

I have never heard of bad oil before to be honest. Internal problems could make good oil look bad after it has run through the engine for a little bit.

                              That's cool. What part?

I have family here and there; most of my family is near Sacramento, CA, and some in Seattle, WA. Kids are mostly in KY, 1 in SoCal, and 1 in Memphis still living with us (he's 16).
