    Rep Your Fraternity!

With the older crowd on here (which kind of surprised me) I know we have some guys who have toe'd the line around here. Plus, its always good to meet other bruhz from around the globe. Please no 'false reppin' -- I'm pretty sure you'll get challenged by someone who really belongs to that fraternity.

    I'll go first

    Re: Rep Your Fraternity!

I wasn't a believer in fraternities while I was in college. I mean if you're saying you belong to a "brotherhood", why would you resort to hazing guys who are trying to get in? Are there not other ways of proving your "loyalty?" I know every chapter doesn't resort to that kind of foolery, but it did at my school and it turned me completely off.

When they engage in the right things and put community service first, that's when it becomes tolerable.

For me, I was part of an honor society, Upsilon Pi Epsilon, for excellence in Computer Science. I don't know if that's 100% a frat, but it's the closest thing I would have gone for. The rest of the Greek stuff didn't interest me at all.

Yeah, one of my roommates has struggled to make ends meet at times from paying back loans. Not loans for school, but loans from paying for his fraternity. He went to Purdue before transferring, and he doesn't stay in contact with even like 3 of his frat bros, and has been back there twice in the last 3 years. Not worth it to me.

But on the other hand, along with networking and all that, frat boys get 'access' to a lot of sorority girls non-frat boys can't get, unless you're an athlete. At least for the most part.

                    I see.

Not sure what fraternities you guys tried to join or seen but its not about 'buying friends' or picking up females. Can't speak on how Greekz conduct themselves on campus but I know thats not the principle of those organizations. Honestly, its just kids being kids.

I know pledging is still 'popular' on HBCU campuses, anyone attend those type of schools?

I couldn't care less if this is popular on OS.

I was in a fraternity back in college. We had our fair share of college shenanigans, but never was I or any of my pledge brothers (or those after us) hazed in any way. It was a mental/spiritual journey more than anything else - lots of self reflection. Our ritual (for me) was a constant reminder to be better each day. I know each chapter is different and I was in a particularly strong chapter nationwide, which definitely shaped my opinion of greek life. I would absolutely do it again.

When i was at HU, pledging one of the pillars was a big deal. I didn't stay long enough but i more than likely would have pledged Alpha

Will say this though the damn Qs aka Omega Psi Phi was EVERYWHERE on that damn campus.

I dont have anything against the frat thing. I actually appreciate the brotherhood concept. I just have problems with the dues. And the hazing for a semester or more is nonsense.
