    Speeding Ticket In Wisconsin, Help

I think I remember a thread from Illinois last year, but this one involves our 16 year old son in Wisconsin. We have two teenage drivers on our insurance, one boy, one girl. My wife picked up a speeding ticket last March, so, her ticket will be off the record in two years. My wife had a no fault car accident this past December. Now, our son just received a ticket for 15 over, 70 in a 55. In Wisconsin, that's 4 pts and I think he is doubled to 8.

So, I am wondering how do I find information if Wisconsin has driving courses to reduce the points or expunge the ticket. I can imagine our insurance will skyrocket if we roll over and play dead and don't show to court, especially for a teenage son.

Any advice? My wife said he should go to court to see if he can get the points reduced. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

PS- Interesting, over the past several years, I've received two warnings, but teenagers don't get a warning?

I've read some crap on the net(don't know if it's true) that insurance companies are buying radar guns throughout the country to police depts.

Check with the local DA. Often times tickets can be reduced and or be thrown out. DA's in NC are pretty helpful, don't know about WI.

      Don't believe everything you read

It's worth your while to see if they can attend a State Sponsored Traffic School. You'll still have to pay the fine & court costs, but they'll not issue any "points". That's how it is in several of the surrounding states, I'd assume WI would have something similar.

Honestly I'm not sure (and I'm an officer)

I don't know if PJC (prayer for judgment continued) can apply to speeding tickets, or if they even have that in WI. I know that you only get one of these and usually it involves taking some sort of class. Oh and yep, you have to pay a few hundred bucks to take the class.

Honestly it's all a money grab and disgusting to me.

I halfway agree with IndianBird. The ticket won't be thrown out because it's a speeding ticket. It's not a non-moving violation, which you can go fix before your court date (like an expired tag or driver's license). When your son goes to his first appearance he can ask the DA to reduce the ticket to something like 60 in a 55. That's probably your best bet.

If you try and fight it you'll lose unless the officer/trooper is incompetent. It's very hard to get out of speeding tickets.

Isn't he still subject to the cost of the traffic school? Or do you guys have it for free?

            Thanks for the advice.

I think I'll have my son ask if he can go to this class too. Reduces your points by 3 and cost $64.00. It doesn't reduce the fine and doesn't guarantee your insurance rates will drop, but I know the less points you have, the less amount insurance goes up.

You can only take the course once every 5 yrs, which makes sense.

Wisconsin defensive driving and traffic school requirements and options. Take a course to dismiss a traffic ticket, satisfy a court requirement, or earn a car insurance discount.

When I got mine here in Missouri, I had to pay the lawyer fee, the ticket, and $50 for the class. But it was moved to a non-moving violation and didn't impact insurance or points on my license.

Wow, your lawyer negotiated that deal? Good lawyer.

I'm not sure he negotiated it so much as that's all it takes in Missouri. In all, I spent about $350 and had to spend a Saturday in an awful class.

Check with any of the traffic lawyer websites. You can put your info in and they will have a lawyer call you. You can discuss your options for free.

Actually, a friend of ours just had his sons points reduced from 8 to 6, by simply attending a drivers safety course.....right here in Wisconsin(Appleton area) He was speeding, and zipped past a school bus with the "stop" sign extended out, and a cop saw it all. He said he can also get 2 more points reduced if he does something else...but I can't remember what it was.

When I got my first and only ticket at 16(40 or 45 in a 25) I just had to pay $60 and take a 3 hour class and it was swiped clean off of my record.

                          We may lawyer up.

I talked to a lawyer friend who put me in touch with another traffice lawyer. After speaking with the lawyer, our district area is by the book. The judge and DA usually don't negotiate, and the police are very militant.

$200.00 for his fee and he will move it to a non-moving violation with 0 points and no insurance cost, plus no driving school. He said we definately need to move it out of your district and he said that will be no problem.

In Wisconsin, our son's next speeding ticket or moving violation ticket is doubled in points.

This sure beats having your insurance rise over the next three years.

Now, with all this information, my wife and I will have a nice little come together meeting with our son.

$200 sounds about right. If he can get rid of the fine also that would be great.
