Anyone ever built a craps table?
Me and my brother are wanting to build a craps table, for recreational use of course. Anyone ever built one. We have a very tiny budget for this and limit crafting skills. Any ideas?Tags: None -

Being a lover of craps I think the idea is cool but unless you're doing a casino night there's no need, you can play craps anywhere. Spend the money on some loaded dice and take everyone's bankroll instead.I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

The double digit figure we will spend on materials isn't going to outweigh the frustration free method of spending hundreds of dollars on a table.
What we had in mind involves some OSB and 2x10s as the main frame. Plus we live together so we have nothing better to do.Comment

If you do it, do it right. Make the table ovalish like a casino craps table and don't be a cheap ***, get the table felt with the craps design on it. Good luck and post pics when/if you do build it.The double digit figure we will spend on materials isn't going to outweigh the frustration free method of spending hundreds of dollars on a table.

The pyramid foam alone would put us near triple digits. That stuff is not cheap. We don't have the handy man skills to warrant going all out or else we would.Comment

If you got the shape of the box and the craps design on the felt right, you're set.I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Re: Anyone ever built a craps table?
Pretty much what we are doing.
3/4" osb for base. 2x12 wood or MDF if they eve make it for sides. 3'x6'. Found a guy near us that makes custom chip rails. Not sure if we want to break the bank and do pyramid diamond on the end or find a cheaper alternative.Comment

Re: Anyone ever built a craps table?
Well we are almost done with it. Just need to do railing. Think we are gonna go with 1"x4" and plastic chip holders for now. Have a guy who will make rails out of wood once we have more money to.
I'm bored so I'll list out our steps and what we used.
- 3/4" OSB
- 2 - 2"x12"x10'
- Medium size can of something walnut stain (can easily use a small can)
- an of semi-gloss lacquer
- 1 - 36 square foot sheet of carpet padding
- 6' of this blue material we found at wal mart, it's pretty thick, kind of rubbery.
- Found a felt on ebay, pretty standard. About 73"x37". Bigger then advertised which was good.
- Have a lot of the pieces coming in the mail like the on/off puck and the other buttons
1. Trip to lowes. Found straightest 2x12x10' we could. Had them cut us two 36" pieces and two that were about 69" for the sides. OSB cut to 72x36.
2. Stained everything and let sit over night. Coated everything with lacquer in the morning.
3. While that dried we started on the actual table. Sanded the edges of the OSB some. Got out big sheet of carpet padding and cut it down to fit flush. Then we cut it down to fit inside the confines of the future wood sides. Left about 1/8" of a gap to give room for the felt. Use spare pieces of 2x12 as guides.
4. Used spray adhesive to attach the padding to the OSB. Stuff goes everywhere.
5. Did felt next, had to iron for the first time in a while. Used a little spray adhesive to keep it from moving, then really tightened it down with staples.
6. Started on ends next. This was a pain in the *** because of how un-handy me and my brother are. had to get the padding just right. Ended up with about 1/2" of wood showing on top and bottom and cut of 1.5" of each sides. Before we glued it on we stapled the blue material to the bottom so that we could pull it tight and see how it was all going to fit before we glued down the padding. Glued that down and then stapled the top part of the blue to the front side of the wood.
7. Next was the big finish. Brought in side pieces and put two screws in each end to hold it together, then secured it to the table from the bottom.
I think that was all the steps. Between all the materials, felt, new dice and all of the other accessories I think we are right above $200. Have two spots where we stapled to close to the padding when we had room to spare and you can see the staples. Dark green nail polish or magic marker should take care of that. Going to throw it on Craigslist for $600 OBO and just see if someone will offer half of that. Just so we can build another know that we kind of know what we are doing.

Re: Anyone ever built a craps table?
Much better then I expected. We really want to get these chip rails - http://austin.craigslist.org/for/2823954185.html guy will do them for $6 a foot so around $100 after shipping. That is why we want to try and sell this one. If we get lucky, come out $100 ahead and reinvest is back into another table.Comment
