starting a new job in a new city

in October. Does anyone know when it would be best to start calling around for apartments. I was thinking the sooner the better, but I could also see it being somewhat useless since the places wouldn't really know their availability 7 months out. Any knowledgeable input would be appreciated.

I guess it depends on how populated the area is.

My friend just moved to Birmingham, but he didn't start looking for a new apartment until about a three weeks before moving. I would at least start looking around and deciding what area you want to live in...

That way, when the time comes, you will have an idea of what places you want to target.. In a situation like this, I doubt it can hurt to be too prepared.

If it is an area that you are not familiar with, I would take a weekend trip there. Scope out the area, and ask around. From there, I would suggest 2-3 months prior, start searching.

6 months. That way you can compare prices and location. Most apartments you can schedule when youll be moving there.

It would help if you are looking to compare prices for different neighborhoods/suburbs, but most places will not know if they have any or what types of apartments available until two months out. Majority of apartment require a two months notice to move out so that would be the indication of availability.

That is kind of what I was thinking. I should also say that the city is not completely new. I interned their for 3 months about a year ago, so I do know the areas I would like to live in.
