    Grandpa

My Grandfather has had lung cancer for two or three years and he has been in the hospital for a week. Tonight the doctor came in and said he will probably pass away tonight or tomorrow, my mom called me and told me that.

I have yet to go in and see him, he his so drugged up on pain medicine he has been delusional for weeks.the reason I have not gone in and saw him before he passed is I do not like to see him in the condition he his currently in, because he has been my father since my mom and my real dad divorced. So he has been the strong male figure in my life and it is really hard to see him in such a condition to were he just looks out of it at all times and I do not even know if he recognizes me.

On top of all this, he has been teaching me the ropes on our family farm for the past two years and I don't know half the stuff I feel like I should. It's just crazy how fast this happened, two months ago we were doing it side by side and he was showing me new things everyday. But now I am left taking over a farm that has been in my family five generations and I feel highly unqualified, at the age of 21, to make it run as seamlessly as he did.

Sorry, I just felt like writing this down. (It makes me feel better about all of it than talking does)

    Re: Grandpa

Sounds pretty much like what my grandpa was going through. Yes, it's tough and sad, and it happens pretty fast. Then, with every day that passes the person almost disappears.

Be strong, and trust your instincts.

Be strong, brother.. your family will need it.

I experienced something very similar a few months ago and I immediately broke down, after hanging up the phone, with my mother and I still tear up from time to time, when I think about it in my head (there's no shame in that)..

My grandfather's blood pressure couldn't be sustained and his vital organs (kidneys) began to shut down on him. It all happened at once.

I'm not telling you this to steal any thunder from you venting, but simply to let you know that there's someone else out there that's either going or gone through the same thing.. there's no need to apologize, that's what we're here for in the neighborhood.

Again, do your best to be strong for your family (especially your mother)...

I feel for you man, even though I have no idea what you are going through.

I never knew either of my grandpas and, luckily, I have not lost anybody close to me yet. I'm curious as to what life would have been like with them around. From stories I've heard, maybe one of them would have loved a little more because we inherited the baseball gene. He was supposed to have gotten a try out with a big league club (Phillies?) as a catcher, but wasn't allowed to leave the farm. My father also had a tryout with the Pirates, but the Army called.

            1) Having been in similar situations, I genuinely feel for you and yours...

            2) You will all get through this...

            3) Whatever you currently think you don't know about this family business, you'll learn by doing...and "sense memory" / necessity....

            Sincere regards!

              Re: Grandpa

Thanks for all of your support and feedback.

I have had a bad stretch of life/luck. Last July my roommate got dangerously drunk while I was gone and wondered out into the middle of the road in his underwear and passed out. Well I was coming home at about one in the morning and we live in the country and it was a pitch black cloudy night. He pass out right after a small hill in the road and I didn't see him because I was driving a reasonably big truck and my headlights were to high, plus I was more worried about watching for deer and critters not a person lying in the middle of the road. They said the blood test showed he was near lethal limits of intoxication and he was known to sleep walk while being drunk.... I had nightmares for weeks.

Then last December I got a $1500 fine from the county police and now this is going on.

Sorry I don't mean to sound all "Woe is me"
