    Cleveland Rocks!?!?

Hey guys just coming in to ask some of your experiences in Cleveland. I have a final round interview with a company there in a couple weeks and was wondering if this is a city I should seriously consider after I graduate. I go to Temple (Philadelphia) so I'm coming from a northeast vibe. I don't necessarily need a big party scene or nightclubs but I would like to live in a city that has culture and most importantly character. So what's Cleveland been like for OS'ers (I know we have a couple living in the area). How's the city doing currently (economically)? Are there a decent amount of young people living in the area? Is there enough to do for someone coming from the east coast? Thanks for any help in advance.

    Re: Cleveland Rocks!?!?

I probably won't be of much help since I'm not a city guy, country boy born and raised. But I do live in Wayne County, only a hour-ish from Cleveland.

So obviously I've been to Cleveland, but all I can really speak about are the entertainment asppects of the city, not so much about the economy and jobs and such.

You get the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which is really cool, Cedar Point is amazing, best amusement park I have personally been to. In Canton is the Pro Football Hall of Fame, about an hour(i think) from Cleveland, and it is awesome.

As far as sports, well you would have to suffer watching some very, very poor sports teams lol.

Like I said, from my experience it's a decent place, not for me at all though and I try to avoid cities as much as I can lol, so I'm not exactly sure.

        Never heard of it.

Seriously though, this city is in terrible shape economically right now. All of my friends, which range between semi-high profile attorneys to short order cooks, are having issues financially that they never had in years past. If you have a choice as to where you will end up, this place shouldn't be anywhere near the top unless you have roots here like I do. It depends on your scene and personality, but this place can be either really easy or downright impossible to start a new life in. I actually live in the city, most of the other Cleveland posters are suburbanites so feel free to ask me anything in particular.

I will try my best to answer anything specific.

What type of company and will you be living/working in the city or in the suburbs? If it is the suburbs will it be the east side or the west side? This actually makes a HUGE difference for a variety of reasons.

I don't think that will matter one way or the other, as Cleveland is part northeast and part midwest in terms of style and vibe. It just depends on the specific area you end up living/working in.

The only area where there is a party/club scene at all is right in the city. As far as culture, we do have quite the melting pot here so that is not a problem. Character? That's all a matter of opinion and I guess nobody would be able to answer that question for you better than yourself.

Economically speaking, there aren't many places in worse shape than we are right now. I love it here, but I have roots here that go back well over thirty years. If I didn't have any roots and such a social life here, I would have left a long time ago.

This is one thing that is a good advantage here. There are a lot of people in the 21-30 range here from all walks of life and backgrounds. I don't want to break the TOS so if you want specifics on this you can PM me.

Yes and no. Our weather here is also some of the worst in the entire United States (although we did just have our most mild winter in recorded history) but we do have all four seasons every year, which can be interesting. It all just depends on what your background and interests are though. If I knew what kind of music you liked, if you liked to drink, etc. I could be of more help. One thing that is totally awesome here is the food scene. We have so many great restaurants and eateries here that it rivals some of the much larger cities. This is an ideal place for a foodie type.

If there is anything more specific you want to know, just ask.

Thanks man for all the help and input! The company is located in the old PNC building I believe (downtown?), I believe I'd get a pretty decent starting salary, so I assume my dollar would go a longer way in Cleveland. I can deal with bad sports haha as I have lived in the Philly are for most of my life. It's good to hear there are alot of young people and its a melting pot. I'd definitely like to live in a place with a nice mix of people and cultures (hipsters, artists, businesspeople, etc.). Is living in the heart of the city a good idea? I'm sure rent is way more affordable than here in Philly. I prefer "dive" type bars as opposed to straight sportsbars inhabited with a bunch of bros. I'm into hip hop and alternative music mostly.

I don't see why the fact that somebody thinks Brett is the best QB would mean they were "on stuff". He is without a question a top 10 QB all time, and it's not out there to consider him top 3 or even number 1. It depends who you ask. The argument for him to be number 1 can certainly be made with ease though. To me the top 4 consists of Favre, Montanna, Marino, and Unitas. And with those 4, you can personally rank any of them as "the best" and I won't argue much. It's really all opinion though.

Anyway, this isn't exactly the place to talk about this topic so I apologize to the OP for taking it off topic just now.

I've been there twice which is 2 times more than I'd ever want t spend there. OK, i'm just being snarky I found Cleveland to be an okay city but there's not all that much to do and yes it's struggling a lot financially. Other than the touristy things there's not much to see and do there.

That being said, I found a lot of deals when I bought stuff there so if you want to spend money there it's not bad at all.

                      Re: Cleveland Rocks!?!?

It's a city that is a nightmare for visitors, but if you take the time to live in the area and know where to go, it can be among the best places to live. The problem is, we get taxed to all hell here, so even if you make a decent salary, expect to lose some of it because of made up taxes and weird bull**** that the rest of the country doesn't have to put up with.

Cleveland is like the rusty camero of America. You don't think much of it on the outside, but if you are willing to work with it and figure it out and put in hard work, you'll end up loving it.

I will say, it is kind of odd that someone would relocate here for a job. Most of the time, people leave because of a job.

Lived on the east side for 35 years. Have had several opportunites to move and won't. I absolutely love it here, tons of stuff to do IMO, lots of sights to see, water front, all 4 seasons of weather, and an overall cool vibe of people.

Having kids helps with the things to do obviously, as there's just a lot of places to go with my kids and have them enjoy it. Restaurants out the wazoo, especially downtown. I'm about 15 minutes east of downtown, but end up there a lot.
