To play small college ball or go to a university and just have fun?

    Hey Guys,

I'm a 5'10 junior with a 3.8 and i finally am starting to get some interest from colleges for basketball. D3's but are very good academic schools. I might be able to get some D2's by the end of senior year and club ball. I know i dont have the size for D1 and I'm okay with that. But my question is, would you guys rather play small ball in college or go to a big university and just have fun?!? I mean i LOVE basketball, train everyday for 4 hours and love every second of it. I just dont know what i want right now, any input from anyone would be appreciated!

I thought of the same problem when I was playing football, the offers never came but I decided no matter how much I loved the sport I wanted to enjoy college for 4 years with my best friends at a bigger school

I say it depends on your morals.

What I wouldn't give to play ball again.

I had several friends who initially went to smaller schools to play football (D2 and D3), and none of them still play. The common sentiment was that the amount of work really wasn't worth sacrificing their grades. They all transferred and seem to be cool with what they're doing now. I also have a friend who could've played I-AA/D2 football but chose to go to Penn State instead and doesn't regret it at all.

If you really, REALLY love the sport than I'd say try it.

Go play ball and don't give it another thought.

You said you love ball. LOVE. That's reason enough right there. If you can still go to a school that is solid academically and play a game you love for four more years, DO IT. You will not regret it. If you DON'T play, if you pass up that opportunity, you are very likely to regret it.

You'll never regret playing. Period. If you choose the bigger school and no ball, your chances of having regrets down the line are huge. Trust me on this one.

Go play ball, man. If you don't, I can almost promise you that you'll regret it. You can still have as much fun at a smaller school while playing ball as you'd have at a bigger school.

These stories happen, sure. I have a friend who played corner in football and chose the smaller school so he could play. He was named a D2 All-American and damn near got some tryouts with a couple of NFL teams. He doesn't regret going to a small podunk school at all. He said he feels like he didn't miss out on anything, but he could have missed out on four years of playing ball if he went with the bigger school where playing wasn't a viable option for him.

            Both scenarios could happen.

In the end, go with your heart.

20 years from now you'll look back and say to yourself I wished I would have went and played college ball and you'll always wonder what might have been. Don't give this a second thought. At least go and play your first season or 2 if it isn't what you was hoping for you still have time to transfer and have 2 years to just enjoy college.

Re: To play small college ball or go to a university and just have fun?

Every situation and school is different. If the academics are pretty good at the D3 school or whereever you're looking at playing ball, go for it. If the academics aren't that great, then you have some thinking to do.

I ended up at Syracuse University on an academic scholarship, so I valued that over playing competitive basketball for a few more years, but I had an awful first semester and contemplated transferring to a D3 school and getting back into playing basketball again. It's really up to you. For me, the academic scholarship and academic standing of Syracuse was enough for me to move on to just playing pick-up/intramural games, but everyone has their own set of priorities.

Note: The D3 schools that I was looking at were nowhere near Syracuse in academics, so that was the biggest factor for me, not to mention I could watch one of the best basketball teams in the country a couple times a week.

I got an offer to play football at Mississippi College and turned it down. Mostly for personal and financial reasons, and the fact that some of my body parts still hurt from playing high school ball.

But I mean, who knows. If you play well enough you could get an opportunity to transfer to a bigger school. And if they're offering a full ride, you really should take it.

Play ball. If you hate college basketball you can always transfer. Switching schools is definitely not the end of the world. It's not like you give it up completely. If you do transfer, make one of your points of interest finding a school with a quality rec center.

I would go play ball... going to a big University, partying, etc. is fun (I played D1 soccer myself), but nothing will replace the comradery and experience you gain from playing an organized sport... especially in college. Chances are, these next four years are the last you'll have to truly be part of a team, and I can tell you right now, looking back, those are some of the best memories I'll ever have.

As a matter of fact, due to my grades not being where they should, I ended the final couple years of my career playing at a smaller D3 school, so I can speak to both ends, and it was a BLAST. It was competitive, but we played a little more for fun, and I made some of my best friends ever on that team. Plus, since the school was smaller, we got great crowds at the games, and everyone knew us (including the girls ). Let's just say that the parties we threw at the "Soccer House" were awesome... and basically an every weekend occurance.

IMO, you have an opportunity that many don't, and it would be a shame to waste that.

It sounds like you love the game so it would be a shame to not at least give it a shot. I went the D3 small college route and it was probably the best decision I've ever made. I got to play basketball and still party. It's still college so you can still do both. Good luck.

I'm with most folks here. If you love the game and you want to continue playing, there's really no reason not to give it a shot. Regardless of which college you select (big or small), you're going to make your own fun. It's going to be a heck of an experience either way.

I had the opportunity to play baseball in college for a couple of schools, but decided against it. I ended up rooming with a baseball player my freshmen year. The first time he woke up at 5 am to go run 10 miles for practice while I continued to sleep, I knew I made the right decision.
