Oh I think you misunderstood what I was referring to. The "stay in one location and retire there" was meant don't go buying, selling, buying, selling. You want to pay off your house by retirement so you can retire where you like. I have been over about 50% of the US and outside the country several times. So I agree with that statement.

My point is at 65 your house should be paid off. Then at this point you can sell your home and buy a new one CASH wherever you want to retire. But you don't want to be financing again at 60 something years old. That is not the way to financial freedom.

To be able to ENJOY your retirement and do the things you have always dreamed of doing. For 90% of the people you are going to need to have no house note to achieve those things and truly enjoy your retirement.

Having your house paid off by the time of retirement does NOT mean you are stuck in one location. It means you have the equity to do what you want.

....also if you like high tickets and not being allowed to pump your own gas (and getting in trouble if you try to do so).

Yes, that's the way that it is. I live in Boise, so I don't live in Oregon. My first trip driving through Oregon, I almost got tackled at the pump because I got out and tried to pump my own gas. Dumb.

For some reason, that law astonishes me. What does that say about Orgonians? "We just can't trust these people with flammable liquid."

I remember the good ole days of full service gas stations. Good to see Oregon remembers them too.

Wow that is mind blowing. I know there are still some 'full service' type stations around but I had no idea anywhere had a rule making it illegal to do so.

On an unrelated topic the mrs and I recently decided to get a substantial amount of solar panels installed on our house. With the rebates and cash back that our government allows on solar it should have paid for itself in 4 years and we have a contract to get paid for any excess electricity we produce that get put back into the grid until 2028.

It's going to be awesome to see $0 electricity bills from here on out and the rep calculated with the system we have we should be getting an extra $1200 per quarter back that will straight onto the home loan to pay it down even quicker. Plus as a bonus I get to feel all smug like I'm some kind of green activitist and can now be talked to by prius owners.

Interesting jonesy, we looked into it but just couldn't pull the trigger.

On another note, I just installed my own roof last Monday. It took us 3 days, me and a buddy of mine on spring break.

25 squares, 2,700 square feet, 6,600 pounds of shingles. It was backbreaking work and I will never do it again, but it was well worth it from a money stand point.

I was quoted $6,400 for professional installers to do it. I ended up destroying that doing it myself. 75 bundles, 90 feet of capping, 240 feet of drip edge, 7 rolls of felt, cap nails, 6 lead boots, 2 wirly birds, and regular nail gun nails.

Entire supplies costed me 1,700. Then another 250 for the dumpster and 60 to rent nail gun. So entire roof costed me 2,000 compared to 6,400. That is a saving of 4,400. Never do it again but it was worth it. Good thing I have at least 15 years before I have to worry about a roof again!!

How are they installed/what does it look like? I was just about all in on this a couple of years ago, but the cost was starting to come down (starting, as in it was still pretty expensive).

How much $ have you invested in this? (Estimate, if you don't mind good sir. And if you do mind, I understand. You're an ***hole.)

Solar can be pretty awesome.....if you get enough sun. Not much of an option around these parts, almost impossible to justify the expense.

This thread is a good read; I just moved into my own home a few days ago, and I was at a loss as to what initially do. I still have the "new homeowner" shock deal going on.

Having just moved in, it wouldn't be a bad idea just to take a general "inventory" of anything you think that you may either need (or want) to do, then do a little sorting according to size/difficulty/financial. I find that I tend to either ignore, or just plain forget about a lot of the small stuff. But if it's on my list and I'm looking for something easy to do I can pick out some of those often overlooked improvements.

Document your improvements and keep your receipts, it may save you a few tax dollars later.

Pretty hard to compare I imagine because I live in Australia and you in the US but all up it is costing us 18k for the panel's / installation etc.

Not cheap but then again neither is the cost of power which in only going to rise. Living in a hot part of a sunny country like Australia it just made sense as we have nearly full sun probably 90% of the time throughout the year where I live.
