    Ways To Travel Abroad

Alright. Gonna get straight to it.

I want to be able to experience living somewhere outside the US even if its only for a short amount of time (i.e. 1 month). Thing is, I dont that kind of money.

So I was hoping you guys might know of some options that there are to live abroad for free or relatively cheap.

I looked at the Peace Corps. But I dont want to be anywhere for over 2 years. I was thinking something between 1 month and a year would be pretty cool. And also, at a really quick glance, they seem to send you to areas one might not really want to go because they are suppose to be helping communities in need; the less affluent areas.

I would love to experience the life, culture of places like China, Japan, Singapore, South America, Europe, or even Australia...I just realized that I pretty much listed everywhere in the world. But that should show you just how open I am to seeing other parts of the world. Lol

I'm 25 now. So I want to get it done while young and before I start my doctorate.

Anything like the peace corps, that would take care of all or most expenses. Im even willing to work outside the country if thats possible and American is someone that would be hired for whatever reason.

So any help, tips, experience, and suggestions you guys might have would be great. Thanks fellas.

    Re: Ways To Travel Abroad

Unless you speak another language other then English fluently, the chances of you working some where outside the USA is pretty damn slim. You could always go to cooking school or something of that sort over seas. Then you also have the Red Cross, they get sent over seas pretty regularly.

      Damn.

That's why I was hoping for some type of program like the Peace Corps.

But like I said, from what I looked at, it says there is a 2 yr commitment. Not feeling that.

Anything similar without that long time commitment.

No organization is going to front the bill for somebody just there for a month or a few months. Honestly it will be a rest of their money paying for you to live some where and then training you, which also cost them money just for you to bounce after a few months.

IF you want somebody to pay for your way, you got to put in the time.

Yeah GMSS is right the chances of you being sent abroad for a short amount of time is slim to none. Military, Peace Corps, education, etc will be a lot longer then a month.

I think saving money whenever you can and taking a trip overseas to Europe and visit a bunch of different countries on your own time and expense is the most realistic option.

I totally agree with this. I would say Europe would be last on the list because how expensive it is to travel and do stuff there. I would pick an Asian country to explore.

My buddy just went to Thailand and backpacked his way around. Not sure how much he spent but a US dollar goes a long way in some asian countries. Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and some that come to mind. I know a lot of people choose the Philippines because its cheap and most people there understand and speak English. Plus if you know where you are going, just some of the most beautiful places in the world.

Best advice is to use sources like Trip Advisor and see what people experience and cost of travel and lodging. You'll more than likely live the back packer life for a month but man what an experience you'll have if you plan it right.

You could go online and start filling out applications, and researching requirements to come to that country and work, worst they can tell you is no.

If you have a Bachelors degree, there are MANY opportunities to teach conversational English overseas. You don't have to speak the language of the country you're teaching in, but you have to be a native English speaker. You would be given a stipend, and place to live. Most organizations ask for a one year commitment.

That's about the best you can hope for. In order to work in other countries you have to get work visas and the country is not going to give you something for 1 month unless there is a need and a reason they cannot easily have someone from that country do the job.

Ever watch Locked Up Abroad? If you transport some merchandise for me I can make sure you have an extended trip overseas.

When I was 18, I spent a summer on a kibbutz in Israel, and it was the single greatest summer of my life. I was the youngest volunteer by far (average age was 23-27, but I was accepted since I had friends who lived on the kibbutz), but that didn't stop us from having a blast together. I was at Kibbutz Nir David, and the 17-18 other volunteers were from all over the world (two other Americans, 1 Brit, 1 Irish guy, 2 Korean girls, 5 or 6 South Africans, 2 Aussies, 2 Swedes, and a couple that I don't really remember). It's NOT religious at all, unless you choose to go to a religious kibbutz. Basically, you get assigned a job to do that may or may not change based on your preference and performance (some of the jobs I did are working at a turkey farm, a zoo, a water park, fish farming, and gardening). We were paid about $300 a month, but got free housing, and free food in the dining hall. There was a store on the kibbutz that had basic needs, and a few odds and end for DIRT cheap (bottles of vodka for $3). You work six days a week, but the seventh day is yours to do whatever you want, plus you can request time off (I took three days to go to Egypt for a weekend). Plus, there was a kibbutz chartered weekend at the Sea of Galilee. Everyone in Israel that was born there since it became a country is taught English, and all the signs have both Hebrew and English, so it's easy to get around.

Here's a website with info. Link

If you want any other info from my experience, please ask. I'd love to tell more, but I'm trying to keep it brief so I don't bore anyone. Honestly, I'm turning 31 this month, and I've talked to my wife dozens of times about how much I miss it, and how I want to go back more than anything else.

My community college would do a course every year over in Wales. It counted for 10 credits or so, and was something like $1400, and included room and board. They'd have a class Mon-Thur on a campus on Wales, and you'd have the weekend to go do what you wanted, and since Europe is pretty smashed together, going to Paris for the weekend or something isn't out of the question. I think the course was 6 weeks or so, maybe 2 months. Not too bad. So you could check out local schools and see if there's something like that you could do.
