I had a similar experience, with my last job.

I was promoted way faster than the average person is and most people didn't like the fact that someone who was 20, going on 21 was going to be a supervisor... I was just lucky and got hired on in a department with a great supervisor of my own and he taught me so much stuff.. we're still good friends.

It's bound to happen. That's one of the biggest reasons I rarely mix business with personal...

I slack at work doing the bare minimum possible so expectations for me are never high. This way I avoid getting promoted and keep my friends.

That's not the way I want to look at it, though... If you're meant to shine, you will. True friends will be happy for you every step of the way. On the positive side, it's been great to see that some dudes are true friends and support my success, as do I with them.

If I'm going to lose a friend or things get weird because of a promotion, chances we were just "work friends" anyway and there's nothing of real substance there. No loss there.

Re: You find out who your real friends are...

I can honestly say that the promotion was a pleasant surprise because not once did I ask for it or go looking for it. I was surprised when it was offered and figured most people would be, too. I am a team guy and in our environment you have to be, so I guess my expectations are too high when wanting people to react like I would. Each time someone gets the call, I am happy for them and I can say that with 100 percent honesty. Guess I'm just not the jealous type. Even if you feel the person might not have deserved it, you can still wish the best for them.

I am just growing up, that's all. I heard things were like this at times, but this is my first time experiencing it so the naivety is gone.

Your relationship with everyone you were co-workers with completely changed. You can no longer be "friends" with them if you are their boss. That's asking for trouble.

To a point, I agree. To the guys who were just "work buddies," that's absolutely true. But for the guys who are more than work buddies and true friends, I don't see a whole lot changing. They know me, I know them. I won't lead with an iron fist. I don't see it changing a whole lot. There's a handful of guys I can say this about and they are the only ones who matter.
