An 8-year-old pit bull rescued by a police officer who wanted a companion for his mom has returned the favor in the most selfless way possible. When her owner passed out while crossing a train track in Shirley, Mass., Lilly bravely pulled the unconscious woman out of danger, but ended up being hit by an oncoming freight train herself. The woman escaped unharmed, but the poor pup's price for her courage included a fractured pelvis and an amputated leg.

This is the first story I've read where the pit saves a life instead of taking one. Cool.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Love my Pit... she's the sweetest thing, but if anyone was in danger, she would step right in and protect you.

She even walks the neighbors kids home from the bus, some days. We have some dogs at the end of the road that try to mess with them, so she seems to feel obligated to walk them home.

They can be the best dogs, with the right owner. You can teach them pretty much anything.. I'm often surprised by some of the things she does.

To keep from hijacking the thread.

Yeah pits are great dogs but they get to much of a bad rep. They are up there with German Shepherds for one of my favorite dogs.

I love Pits. I had 2 in my life and they will take a bullet for you. The most common problem I see with owners with Pits is that they don't work them out. They need to run and burn energy, if you don't do that they'll get pent up and wreck ****.

Poor dog. Courageous, but still sad it got hurt like that.

Nobody in that story had a real good time.

Well, this pit bull story is a nice change of pace from most of the others.

Here's another nice change of pace:

According to Fox's Phoenix affiliate, the female pit bull appeared to have been struck by a car on Friday. The male pit bull stayed by her side for more than 14 hours.
"The male pit bull wouldn't leave her, so a nearby business set out food and water," Fox 10 reported. "He stayed with her nuzzling her and lying nearby until the city came to remove her Saturday morning."
