Well are you looking for a carry weapon, or just something to throw lead down range?

If you're looking to carry in the Philippines and it's going to be warm, you may want to go smaller for better concealment, as you'll likely just be wearing a t-shirt and shorts.

I'm looking to carry so for sure something compact. I'm sure I'll get another one for the range or for shooting practice but the first one would be to carry.

What are you looking to spend? You have options starting from a few hundred (maybe less) up to possibly $1000 if you felt so inclined.

Really, the best thing to do is to go to a local gun shop and hold a few to see what feels good. No matter what a review says, a firearm is only as good as it feels in your hand.

Have a .40 S&W and a carry permit. Usually grab the pistol right after my wallet before I leave the house. Had that habit for years now.

If anyone reading this thread might be thinking of purchasing a firearm to carry, do yourself a favor a get some proper training before you do. It could save your life and the lives of others as well. Just wanted to throw that out there.

              Stay safe people.

I know up here in Maine, you have to take a handgun safety course before obtaining your permit. Is it different in every state?

I wasn't informed of any additional training that was required here in PA. I got my permit really quick. I don't think any training courses are required, but I know they do a pretty extensive background check. I'm in the law enforcement field so that probably helped in getting mine so fast.

I like the idea of mandatory firearm training to get your permit though, I wish it was that way in EVERY state.

Yeah, being in law enforcement probably played a part in getting it so fast.

And agreed. I'd hope all states require training before acquiring a permit.

I've been thinking about getting a handgun for a while now too. Wouldn't need a CHL as I would never want to carry it on me. I have 0 experience with guns though. I need to find a place that gives lessons or something.

Highly recommend going with a .22. They're cheap to shoot (box of 500 or so rounds for 15 bucks) and fun as hell. They're great to learn with, as you can shoot all day for pennies basically.

Recently, my aunt passed down my grandfather's 1903 Springfield .30-06 to us. It's in fine condition and shoots great. It was made in 1920 according to the serial number, so it's all right to shoot. The barrel won't explode like other, earlier models.

Strange story: My brother called the sheriff's office after we obtained the gun to get it registered, but the Sheriff said that they don't register guns in Missouri anymore.

4 10s are surprisingly fun to shoot and hunt with. I've got a single shot 4 10 I received, when I was 12 and I shoot 2 1/2 slugs out of it.. has a surprising amount of kick. I don't really hunt anymore, but with someone who was a decent shot, it would be enough to stop a deep.

I obtained mine back in my hometown of Jasper.

The City and County police station are only a few blocks away from each other, but the County has the jail tied on. I went in to the county office to fill out a few forms for registration and the Sheriff happened to all ready be there and he used to hunt with my step dad.

He saw me and looked over my paperwork and went ahead and signed off on it. They usually have a three day wait, but there is no gun safety classes required. They just do a background check.

Yeah every state is different. Some states require a class, some don't you simply fill out paper work. All I can say is don't ever get caught in Massachusetts with a gun. My friend got caught in Mass just 3 miles over the border because he thought he was still in Vermont. Anyway he got sentenced to 18 months in prison.
