    PS3 Hard Drive switch

I'm sure there have been threads about this before, but I just want to know if I made a good choice or not. Today the Mrs gave me the go ahead to upgrade my PS3 HD and so I went to Amazon. The first thing I notice is this beauty:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o01_s00_i00

a 1 TB WD Scorpio Blue 2.5" HD for $107. I'm thinking this is a GREAT steal. So I started reading up on things and I have no idea what I am getting myself into, or if this HD that I purchased is even compatible with a slim PS3. Could someone help me out and let me know. If it is, how do I go about backing up my information, saves, patches, etc.

If it helps, I am a Playstation Plus subscriber. Thanks in advance for any help, and I am sorry about the really rookie question. I've just never upgraded my PS3 HD before.

    Re: PS3 Hard Drive switch

I've done it twice, just upgraded my 60 gb to 500gb, thought 250 would be enough, but I was wrong, too much free stuff from Playstation Plus!

Being a plus member is a help when switching hard drives, upload all of your game saves to the cloud/ps plus online storage, now you won't have to put them on a thumb drive (unless they won't all fit, but I doubt it).

The process itself is actually pretty easy, google it, many sites with pictures.

I will tell you that you need the really small screwdriver set, some of the screws on the hard drive and casing are small and the metal is pretty soft.

Once you have your stuff uploaded to plus online storage, swap out the hard drive. You'll turn on your ps3 and it will format the new hard drive. Now you'll have to go through the process of re downloading everything you've ever downloaded, including add ons, themes, etc. Then you have to copy all of your game saves from the cloud back to the hard drive.

Also when you put in any of your games you'll have to go through the process of the mandatory installs, updates, etc, since they're not on your hard drive anymore.

I think the Slim is okay to fit a 1TB HDD. I don't believe the Fatty can, though.

Doesn't matter if it's slim or fat, the ps3 uses a stock 2.5 inch sata hard drive, the amount of gigs on the hard drive doesn't matter. I have 2 of the original 60 gig PS3's, I still think they look nicer than the slim.

I understand that, but I remember reading articles in the past about it not working. I'm not sure why it ever was the case, but that was what brought me to buying 500GB HDD's for my two PS3's, the Slim included. Now, I wish I hadn't.

If you have trouble unscrewing the HD from it's casing, here is a great tip.

Instead of using a screwdriver and unscrewing the screws like normal, grab a pair of pliers or vice grips and grab the outer edge of the screw instead. Also try grab it from a parallel angle to the screw instead of perpendicular.

It works just as well in case you ruin them trying the normal way.
