I remember at the HS I graduated from almost three years ago, (after going to a well funded Chicago suburb school) had a teacher that taught American Govt who was supposed to be a Spanish teacher, she didn't know the course work, usually taught us the wrong thing, we were behind the other teacher (who was a history teacher which is more qualified) by a large margin. We all pretty much had to wing it, a fourth of the class failed the constitution test which at least in IL is a requirement to graduate (unsure if it's nationwide or not) and had to retake the exam on their own time.
Ironically I had a newer Animal Science teacher (essentially bio with a heavy focus on living/raising animals rather than the internals) that was extremely good and I learned a lot. The school had budgeting issues and guess which one was told to take a pay cut or find a new job?
I feel for you man, I thought about being a teacher at one point, it's really a thankless job in a lot of aspects.
