    Eh, usually they would just piggyback the scanner or use a separate swipe reader. The data is unsecured on a credit card, it's basically just a magnetic UPC style storage method and it has everything you need to use the card.

    Credit card fraud would be easy to prevent, they just don't care, or I guess more specifically securing that data would be more expensive than just ponying up for the fraud. Encrypt the magnetic strip, don't put all the info on the strip you need to use the card, check the name/address before authorizing use, require pin numbers to use like a debit card, etc.

      They showed on the news about a month ago how to steal someones credit card information with a separate card reader. Like, they literally showed you step by step how to set it up so you don't notice.

        I'm living in the stone ages with my checkbook. I don't have a debit card, so I have to write out checks for cash and go to the bank. It really helps me save money though because I'm lazy and would rather not drive out of my way.
