Recovery went really well man, did therapy around two times a week and within a couple of months I was back to normal...playing basketball and all. I honestly can't remember the last time I had back pain now that I think about it.....of course I jacked my knee up a couple of months ago but that's another story...

Surgery was the right choice for me...I'm in my 20's and generally heal quickly...I just couldn't take the pain man....the shots literally gave me about 10 minutes of relief. Dwight Howard described it perfectly...after a while my leg felt completely dead...and It got to the point I couldnt sit down...it was crazy.

    Hope everything goes well bro...

I was feeling amazing until today. My back is starting to hurt again.

Hey PadresFan, how are you feeling? My back pain the past few days is beginning to feel like it did pre-shot.

Back is killing me. I went again last week for a follow up appointment and they are requesting 2 more injections since I had "favorable" results after the first one even though it last only two weeks. I have spoken to a lot of people who had surgery and have felt a ton better and went back to work without issues. Though surgery is not something I want, I do want to be pain free.

I was at a conference over the weeked which required a lot of sitting. My back was sore but I refuse to take all the narcotics all the time to deal with my pain.

Yeah, I just deal with it (or take an Ibuprofen or two). It started getting really bad yesterday. I'm going to call the doctor on Monday and see what the game plan should be.

I really want to avoid surgery though.

Similar thing happened with my wife over the past 2 years due to her deteriorating C4/C5 and C5/C6 discs. Got her first cortisone injection, felt a little better, but the pain was back within 4 weeks. Tried a couple more, no pain relief on either.

Her surgery options were fusing her C4, C5, and C6 together or trying a TDR on the disc between C5 & C6 (with the Pro-Disc C). This past summer she opted for the TDR, which so far, has been a HUGE success for her. Her recovery took a little longer because she had stenosis, which was pinching her spinal cord, but her mobility is almost back to 100% and the pain from that disc is essentially gone.

She's feeling so good now she's going to be back under the knife within a year or two getting the C4/C5 disc replaced.

Second spine injection next Monday. Hopefully it lasts longer than 2 weeks this time...

I received some bad news the other day... My pain got so bad the doctor sent me to have another MRI. The new MRI shows a completely torn disk that is now protruding into my syatic nerve. My most realistic option is to have a spinal fusion.

After talking to a few people who have had back surgery and were forced to medically retired, I am scared about my future. This very well could be career-ending for me. Although my job is labor intensive and extremely dangerous, I love what I do everyday.

This is not an easy thing for me to grasp. I want to be around for my family for the long term without risking further injury. If anyone has some advice or experiences, I would greatly appreciate. This is getting me depressed...

Have they completely ruled out an ADR instead of fusion?

Good question... That will be something I will ask the next doctor when I have my second opinion. My doctor right now is a worker's comp doctor who is looking for the city's best interest. My attorney is sending me to someone who will actually care about me and my future.

So a fusion surgery is in my near future. Anyone ever have this surgery or could provide some motivational words for me? I'd really appreciate it right now...
