What adversities have you had to deal with?

Just wondering what personal trauma's you guys have had to go through and how you got through and or are coping with them?

I know when I was born I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and while I can still walk it is starting to become a challenge.

Had to have heart surgery when I was 10, then my appendix taken out at 14. Generally getting your appendix out is fairly routine, but in rural Nebraska.. it's a different story. It was minutes from bursting by the time they got me in the OR. I'm also very short.. you get used to it, but sometimes you're reminded that it makes a difference in your life everyday, not just with jobs, sports, relationships, peers, ect... you're reminded of it with just about everything you do.

I just take things how they come. Stressing about things isn't going to change the outcome. You just have to make the best with what you have. I think certain adversities help shape you into a better person and it makes you realize who is really important in your life.

I'm sorry to hear about your Cerebral Palsy. I hope you are handling it the best you can.

I was hit by a car at age 9 while riding a bike. Spent 3 days in the ICU and a week total in the hospital. Ended up with a skull fracture and a black and blue body and led to multiple injuries down the road (2 knee surgeries and a hairline fracture in my back). It helped I was physically a strong dude back when I was 9, because the doctors said that made a huge difference.

Just got to keep on keepin' on.

          Pretty much my same thought.

I wish you all the best.

Saying that, however, the biggest adversity I had to face was being pressured immensely take care of my family. My father was the 'man' of the house, working and providing, and in December 2007 he had a stroke, and hasn't recovered fully since. I was 19 at the time, and not really prepared to go from being a regular 19 year old to responsibility. The amount of stress I faced from that time to finally graduating and getting a 'real' job was incredible, but I am grateful.

The adversity I faced was definitely an emoitonal/mental one.

I am short too.. it sucks... but when ever you accomplish something that your not supposed to be able to do it feels great... like out lifting the bigger guys in the gym. One thing that has helped with the CP is staying in the game. Although the pain afterwards is pretty bad keeping your muscles strong while you can still use them is important.

Yeah the first 3 guys sure put a lot of things in perspective.

I have hearing and vision issues and most of my life I was severely underweight to the point that if I didn't turn it around i'd have to be forcibly put in hospital with feeding tubes inside me.

I've also had a testicular procedure done and basically have no sight in my left eye due to glaucoma.

Not quite the same as some of the other stuff in this thread, but my heart stopped three separate times shortly in the first few days after I was born.

I've also got some bad hearing loss, but other than not being able to do what I wanted to do from an early age (Military pilot), it's something I've been able to deal with pretty well. Although I suspect my parents might tell you differently.

This week has been bad. My grandpa passed away, my house and neighborhood got destroyed (well my house wasn't destroyed, but there was damage) and my mom just learned that she might get fired because the health care place she works at just got sold and everyone has to reapply for their jobs.

Was in a car accident when I was 14, had a severe head injury with bleeding on the brain. Wasn't suppose to survive the night. Had to have brain surgery and pretty much relearn everything. Still have problems with it. When I was 29 my daughter passed away, and currently my wife has left me and I haven't seen or spoken to her or my 2 boys in a month now.

I'm with you there! I weigh 120, bench 215 haha. Scoring in a high school basketball game was also a great feeling. I wonder how the guy who was a foot taller than me thought when I dropped 8 points on him? haha

One thing I've noticed, is everything seems to happen for a reason. You just don't always notice it until years down the line or sometimes you may never realize why something happened. I hope all of you guys keep your heads up even through the worst because things will turn around eventually and it will make the good things seem even better.

Re: What adversities have you had to deal with?

When I was a little kid, I broke my left leg (I believe it was a compound fracture because my entire tibia was broken). My dad and I built a ****ty little bike ramp for me to try and jump off and whenever I went up, part of it slid apart so I went down hard with my leg completely under me.

My sophomore year of high school, I was hit by a car before football practice halfway through the season and tore my MCL, LCL and PCL. The next day was suppose to be my first start in high school for the Varsity team (my sophomore year was the first time I ever played organized football, so I felt like it was a big accomplishment to get the nod to start) but I missed about a month and a half before returning to practice.

I don't know why, but I went back more conditioned then I was before the accident. It was very weird.

My senior year, during the first training camp practice, I had a heart attack during conditioning at the end of practice. I started to feel numb during pursuit drills and just couldn't keep going. I went to my doctors the next day and he ran some tests, the main one I remember being an EKG and he said that it was horrible. I had an EKG done my sophomore year and he compared them and it was as if he flipped the readings upside down.

Believe it or not, I was back on the field starting a month later after being cleared by my doctor.

That's nothing compared to some of the stuff you guys are going through, though. CP, Heart Surgery, Skull Fractures, the family issues etc.

I am up to 135 and can bench 215 with a spot. Any advice? I short but stout. I love showing up the bigger guys in the gym. It's fun. Although after every workout the pain is worse so thats not fun. Kind of a double edged sword. Gotta stay strong though.

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. Really sorry to hear everything you guys are going through. Keep strong.

I have pectus excavatum pretty bad, which sucks. It's not as bad as what you guys have posted. But I'm pretty self-concious about it, so I almost never take my shirt off in front of other people...and it just gets annoying when my friends want to go swimming or something, and I have to makeup some excuse not to go.

But I'm 6'7", so I got that going for me physically lol

I don't have anything that bad. My back curves inwards a bit so it's kinda awkward and gives me some serious back pain from time to time, but that's about it physically.

Probably the worst thing I've had to deal with is being in the car crash that made my mom go from being one of the most active people I've ever met (D1 soccer/softball player, always in the yard trimming bushes and gardening and stuff) to no longer being able to lift more than 5 pounds and not be able to sit or stand in one position for more than about 10 minutes before the pain becomes too much for her. And meanwhile, I came out with nothing more than a little headache. And when I think about it, I was sitting in the backseat with my head pressed up against the back of her seat, and I feel like when we got hit head on, it drove my head into the seat and might have been the impact that caused her to be this way. I can usually set it aside and not think about it, but I still occasionally let that guilt come back into my head and I feel awful.
