Re: What adversities have you had to deal with?

My dad had a stroke when I was 18, and it landed him in a nursing home. It pretty much ruined my life. I'm grateful he's alive, but it really impacted me watching him go from a completely smart, strong man, to not being able to remember things, and lose his vision.

It was just shocking to me how quickly it all happened, and to watch him slowly degrade, I've just been lost since, I wasn't ready to be on my own at 18, and I went from a really optimistic person, to someone I could have never seen myself become. Got depressed, and then that turned into anxiety, it's been hell.

Well i was dealing with constant bad abdominal pains about 2 years ago, which finally led me to a specialist that said i have Crohn's Disease/Ulcerative Colitis. Not something that can be cured, only controlled.

On top of that we deal daily with my wife's depression fight, which led to a bad few incidents a few years back i don't really want to detail right this second.

I'm in the music business and I have Meniere's Disease and also suffer from an extreme case of permanent tinnitus.

Not the ideal profession to be in with two different hearing disorders but it's what I love and all I know how to do.

Everyone in here has already had to overcome adversities, for some its a daily battle, for other perhaps a tragic event that occurred and has set them back.

Just remember you are not a product of your environment, situation, disability, what have you. Everyone has the capacity be great and do great things - I truly believe that.

Just keep truckin, stay positive, and have faith in yourself.

Re: What adversities have you had to deal with?

Definitely not as bad as others on the board but within the last 6 years I've been diagnosed with one the most severe types of psoriasis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Also have gone through feet (plantar fascitis,)hip and back problems.

The psoriasis was the worst since it covered about 80% of my body and it damaged me psychologically and physically. I've taken every drug for it but finally found one in the last 2 years that was able to clear up 90% of it. I still go through it everyday and have scars but my life has been better since I've devoted my life to health within the last 6 months.

The rest of the ailments are due to me just eating like **** for a long time and got to over 300 pounds at one point so I was pretty much a mess for many years. I counted at one point taking 6 different meds for all them and this is all in my mid and late 20's.

Turned 30 this year and vowed to end this cycle of being sick. I basically wasted my 20's being sick. I started to make a change this last May.

For those that follow the fitness thread I've talked about taking an allergy test to find out what I was allergic too and found out I was allergic to yeast (this includes alcohol) and dairy.

So I cut yeast, stopped drinking, stopped eating processed food and eventually went vegan in July. During that time I started lifting and doing cardio about 3 times a week. I then found new love in yoga and have incorporated all 3 and now workout 6 times a week. Lift 4 days, yoga 5 days and cardio 6 days a week.

I just started training for a 5k that I'm going to do on January 1st and this was impossible for me to even think this a year ago with my feet and health problems.

I am now medication free except for my psoriasis. Started at 285 pounds in May and now I'm 225 with definite muscle growth and flexibility. I couldn't even touch my toes and now I can now touch my knees with my head and pretty close to doing splits, lol. Yoga also has solved my hip, feet and back problems as well. The only pain i get now is from being sore from working out but its a good pain.

I just can't tell you how much better I am and how much I enjoy life right now. What has helped me a lot is listening to Eric Thomas on youtube. He inspired me to not take any days off and to focus everyday. I'm obviously still working on that since I go on the internet a lot and I'm a tv junkie but have stopped playing video games since May.

Taking down 1 bad habit at time but still being consistent and staying extremely hungry to succeed. I've settled for mediocrity for a long time but things have changed and soon you'll hear me doing big things. I hope everyone here recovers from their adversities and start making these negatives in your life into positives, EVERYONE has that ability if you are alive and breathing.

Re: What adversities have you had to deal with?

Many on this board have experienced a great deal of pain and for that I am sorry because no one should have to deal with such harsh experiences. When I was young (around 5 or so) I would often have seizures I have vague memories of them but it was such a long time ago that I can only remember bits and pieces of those experiences. According to my family it was pretty terrifying i guess I can count myself lucky in the sense that they happened long ago. I learned about death at age 7 when an aunt who was essentially my second mother passed from cancer. As the years progressed Baseball and hockey took a heavy toll on me as I am left with no cartilage In my left knee, torn ligaments in my right elbow, two complete tears in my right shoulder and permanent nerve damage in my right arm. In terms of sickness Pneumonia beat me up pretty bad a while back. However despite this I am fortunate, I am still Alive, Breathing and able to do many things. Life throws alot of crap at you but you learn to get around it
