    Winter Tires

My winter tires should get me through this winter, but I might consider getting new ones (I know one of them has low tread, another one is low but acceptable).

Continental ExtremeWinter and Goodyear Nordic seem like 2 good options. X-Ice, at least according to what I've read on a couple of reviews, are better for ice than snow...?

What winter (snow) tires do you guys have? What would you recommend?

    Re: Winter Tires

I have Goodyear Nordic on both of my Civics that work excellent for Nova Scotia weather. Manitoba get more snow then we do so I'm not sure how Nordic would fare in your conditions. I guess it all depends on vehicle type and how much you want to spend on safety. Some tires can be very pricy. Canadian Tire have Pirelli's running at $466 each!

      Re: Winter Tires

Thanks for the reply. I drive a Pontiac Vibe currently. I wouldn't mind spending more on a good set of winter tires, even though I drive slow in the winter (and I guess most of the time), as long as I feel the difference.

The only thing, is that I have 1 year left for payments on this car, so I'm not sure what to do. I might check and see if the next potential cars (Civic, Corolla) use the same size of tire.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta's going on my 6th year with these tires and I love them, pricey but for how long they have lasted and how good they performed over the years I can't complain.

I use the Continental DWS(all season) and have considered the Ex's...

          For the buck....great tire IMO.

6 years? that's a lot. Even 6 winters is a very nice time frame, in my opinion. Are these studded tires? I think they are illegal here. Where are you from, and do you guys get a lot of snow there?

How about you, Knight? Do you get a lot snow and/or ice?

Yes...a LOT and I drive 250 miles to and from work(twice a week)...so I put about 25,000 miles a year on my vehicle.

On my truck...I used the Bridgestone Winter Duelers...loved 'em....
I then went to my go to site for tires...

www.tirerack.com and researched tires for my passenger vehicles....the Conti's rate very nicely in the snow/ice category.
Wet weather driving is my real deciding factor as that is what I wind up driving in the most(of inclement weather)...but they were great on both ice and snow for the last two years.
I just replaced them with another set.

                Thank you, that's very useful!

250 (x2) miles twice a week? Wow, I don't think I'm brave enough to drive that far during the winter. I try not to drive more than 25 miles...

                  It's still a lot...but it's 250(round trip) twice(sometimes 3 if there is overtime) a week.
No choice. ....gotta get to work and don't want to live in NYC any longer.(although you would think my wife could find someplace a little closer than 125 miles away that she likes.

TireRack is great for the survey results and they are competitive with the pricing.

I'm in Muskoka (Huntsville,Ont) and yeah we get a lot of snow..No studs i couldn't handle that racket. I was shocked too how long I've had them and they still look good. I have driven across country in the mountains in BC and never had a problem. Check them out but yeah get snow tires worth the investment in my opinion.

                      Re: Winter Tires

Lots of driving, guys. It would sound weird but I think I have never ever driven a distance of more than 250 miles, winter or summer. Thankfully, I work close to home, and I don't even get on highways to get there. I drive mostly in the city limits, so I 'stop and go' a lot.

                      Thanks for the help.

I don't understand the point of winter tires or studded tires. I live in Alaska for 3 years and did just fine with all weather tires and used them all year long.

                          Re: Winter Tires

I'm no expert for sure, but there should be a better grip/traction with winter tires. I don't have much experience driving on snow ice, so I try to use everything I can to make it safer.

I hear many people here saying they don't switch to winter tires. To each their own.

Yeah this is my first winter driving and we got hit hard yesterday in Connecticut with snow.

My all season tires on my RWD Genesis coupe were not fun.
I almost spun out a couple times, and couldn't get good traction from a stop.

Ive been researching tires, but man... I don't have any money.
Ive read about putting a lot of weight in my trunk to help the Rear tires get more traction, also do I need to buy winter tires for all 4 tires? Or can I get away with just the back 2?

Your issue isn't tires, it is the car.

You won't have any luck with any RWD car in the snow. My friend had a stang and put 300Lbs of weights in the trunk and it was better, he said.
