So here is my plan for the social part of the game. You can have kids and they can go pro but if they go pro in a different sport you can just import them into that version.

You're adding The Sims to this multi-professional-sport title? Very ambitious to say the least.Comment

Re: Im making a sports game what do you guys think
I strongly recommend that after you finish fleshing out this idea - nothing wrong with ambition, and I applaud that - you write it all down in a notebook, put that notebook away in your desk drawer, forget about it in the short-term, and then try instead to remake Pong. No, go even simpler than that - write a game that asks for a number, and returns a "win" or "loss" message depending on if the number the user chooses matches what the program chose.
The scale of game you are talking about making is utterly massive, something that would require a team of trained professionals months if not years just to begin scratching the surface of. Based on an earlier comment you made that you are just starting to learn how to write code, I venture to guess that at this juncture you simply don't know what you are doing. I also venture to guess that at your current skill level (near-zero) that you absolutely will not be able to make this game, and any attempt by you to do so will only result in your frustration and abandonment of the project. Making video games is not easy.
That said, it's not my intent here to discourage. If you want to make a video game, that's great! My advice to that end is that you take steps to learn about what goes into making video games from a code perspective. Learn about things such as programming language syntax, programming language control structures such as conditionals and loops, how to debug programs, object-oriented programming concepts, data structure manipulation, software project organization, how to implement and properly use design patterns, algorithms and runtime analysis, memory management, etc. Take classes on these things (at a traditional four-year college, community college, vocational school, online program, free tutorials at various websites, or elsewhere). Apply what you learn into personal projects or small-scale group projects with like-minded people. Basically, take the steps necessary to give yourself the knowledge and experience to actually build the game you want to make; don't put the cart before the horse. For a starting point, here's a link to free materials, lectures, and exercises for an Intro To Computer Science course offered at MIT (MIT has many courses offered on its campus online for free for anyone to peruse and make use of).
Assuming you still are interested in pursuing programming video games and decide to seriously pursue it: best of luck to you! If you are already at a school or in a program learning about computer science, that's great! Focus on that, find out if you enjoy it, make your best effort to learn the material, and I hope you do well!
(Post-script: I wasn't kidding about the seemingly-flippant "re-make Pong" suggestion. It's a very common tutorial exercise for those new to game programming. It teaches the programmer right away the initialize-update-render structure of a game program, just about anyone who is at-all familiar with video games knows how Pong is played so completeness and accuracy of implementation is easy to determine, it's not an overly-complex game so the project timeline isn't unreasonably long, and it's a reasonably-sized project for a student programmer still in the process of acquiring basic skills and knowledge. It's where I started myself, after having taken a few classes.)Last edited by Hooe; 11-19-2012, 05:33 AM.Comment

Keep up your idea. I know the guy who came up with the idea for baller beats for xbox and was able to get the game done and got payed without knowing anything about coding. Just had the idea and was persistent on getting it out.

Can we play as Sam Keller or Ed O'Bannon before you get sued?
Spoiler
I'm not trying to rain on your parade, and I am not a lawyer, but you should really leave nothing up to chance if you're going to include real player names. Make sure your *** is covered if you do.
There's an ugly lawsuit over player likeness's going on now and I doubt you want to get caught up in any of that.

Re: Im making a sports game what do you guys think
Not trying to be a dream killer but a dream video game shouldn't be a primary focus when you first start programming. It'll only lead to frustration and disappointment. OP is much better off starting on a much smaller scale. And it's definitely not something you want to do or can do solo.[NYK|DAL|VT]

Re: Im making a sports game what do you guys think
Right on.
I wish you all the luck in the world my man.
You have set an epic goal and it will take a lot to be reached. You will be stepping on other larger, more prominent companies turf along the way and as I have learned, no business likes competition.
So if you really do go all in with this, don't ever doubt yourself or give up.I post the frog

The idea itself isn't bad, but the timing is. I'm speaking from experience. Not that I've ever tried to program a sports game, but I had a project when I first started programming that was programming a very basic game. It took days of work, frustration, testing, and error checking. Trying to do something of the magnitude the OP said just isn't realistic.

Re: Im making a sports game what do you guys think
I was thinking of making this an android app first to see its reception then I am going to attempt to bring it into the computer. I would do an ios but I don't have a mac and I can't develop for the ios.Check out my Baseball Rumors Blog http://baseballrumors101.blogspot.com/Comment

Sounds like it might be a good text based game but it takes a really long time to learn code. Good luck all the same

Re: Im making a sports game what do you guys think
I begin work on a cell phone app game for electric football. I've already contacted Miggle Sports, the makers of the original game for permissions as well as another company who created a similar game for the iphone for patent and copywrite info.
First order of business is to do the research to find out if your idea is out there already. Make sure of this because you dont want to get 25-30% into the project only to find out that someone has beat you out on the exact same idea.
Second, forget about licensing, you cant afford it realistically. Just create your own world from scratch. Plenty of sports games out here without licensing. Focus on the gameplay and make sure its fun and real players and teams will be an afterthought.
Third, start small and work your way up like someone else suggested. Idea wise. Find out what is plausible and can be learned quickly and what may take some time to learn. Realize that created your characters and animating them will require the most time. (For example, only reason I chose Electric Football is because the characters require no animations. This was a design chose to spare myself headache)
As far as coding goes, dont be discouraged in that department. Its a plethora of info and DIY forums that can help you along with that. Its also important you figure out the basics on your own so you can at least ask questions in detail. As long as you got the time to learn.
And always remeber to write out everything in detail. It'll help you out immensely with production. Build a checklist and make sure you knock out each task before going on to the next one.
One last thing, if you plan on releasing this for some sort of profit, be sure to realize that just about everything has probably been patented already so make sure that you aren't infringing on someone elses idea or your game wont fly.
There are plenty of independent publishers out here looking for cell phone apps so you're good to go and good luck.http://neverfollow.biz (Independent Music Group)Comment

Re: Im making a sports game what do you guys think
Haha just kidding, but yeah I don't see where this is heading. OP, trust GMSS and the rest of us when we say that you don't know what you're getting yourself into. If this miracle happened, as GMSS said, you're bigger than Zuckerberg in our eyes.
I've made a small maze game with Inception-like presentation for a class, which was damn fun to do, but took over 100 hours like nothing. Luckily, making new levels might only take a few hours at a time because all of the classes are in place (aside from designing the mazes themselves), but you're talking about something that is beyond any level ever attempted.
It would be easier to propose a text-based simulation of your classes and character behaviors. Present that, then work your way up. This game you're trying to make can't be made though, even by Ubisoft or EA. It's just too big (and expensive if you are counting licensing).Last edited by Blzer; 11-20-2012, 01:52 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

You can purchase legal VMWare to download iOS on your computer, or you can send it in somewhere to dual-boot two operating systems on your machine.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
