    Sleep Paralysis

There was a thread made about this subject back in 2004, but it can no longer be posted in.

I had my second experience with sleep paralysis only about an hour ago. The first time I had it was back in 2008. What a scary and helpless feeling this gives you.

For those who don't know what sleep paralysis is, it is something that happens while falling asleep or waking up. Your mind is awake, but your body isn't. Thus making you unable to move. Hallucinations and hearing things are also common with this. A lot of people have said they sense an evil presence in the room as well.

It's a very strange, scary, and interesting thing to have happen to you. Two times in four years this has happened to me. Both times while my wife wasn't home too. I can't stop thinking about what happened to me. I was absolutely terrified. I had been in and out of sleep most of the night because my 8 month old son kept waking up in his crib. Not sure if the messed up sleep pattern during the night caused it. I woke up to a strange sound that I can only describe as the spaceship type or beaming up sound you hear in movies. The next thing I know, I can't move or hardly breathe. It feels like something is sitting on your chest with their hand over your mouth. I really felt like there was some kind of evil presence in the room. It is physically exhausting to try to move your body when you can't. I had tunnel vision and I saw one of my black tattoos on my arm turn white during this experience. I haven't been able to get back to sleep since.

I called my wife at work a few minutes after I woke up to tell her about it.

Just curious if any of my fellow OS'ers have had experiences or deal with this frequently, and how you handle it?

I experience this all the time. I agree with you it is one of the scariest things to go through.

I experience this once a week or so, whenever I'm really stressed and really tired. I just re-position my body when I feel like it's gonna happen or after it happens. Just don't position yourself where your mouth is covered and can't breathe! I prefer just moving myself to a prone position and sleeping like a baby that way lol.

Wow, once a week. I would hate to experience this that often. Do you ever see, hear, or sense an evil presence or anything?

Yup... Sometimes you think you're opening your eyes (or sometimes it feels like something is forcing you to open your eyes) and you see a figure in the room. One time I really saw a distinct figure was senior year in high school I was taking a nap (so it was daytime) and I had this happen to me and some lady was standing at the foot of my bed looking at me... I coulda sworn it was real, but usually at the end of these things you wake up and it's like a "Oh it was just a dream" type of feeling and you try to go back to sleep. It used to scare the crap out of me especially with the picture on here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis ... But it's all just random neural activity going on in your brain.

This has happened to me by myself (most often times) but has happened to me numerous times when I'd be sleeping right next to my ex-girlfriend.

EDIT: I don't hear alien noises but me, I hear demonic voices like screams and mumbles sometimes. I try to pray and sometimes I can't even think properly enough to pray... But sometimes I take on whatever fear I'm feeling and edge the "evil presence" on and tell myself that God is mighty and I'm not afraid. :P

Like I said, this has only happened to me twice. This time I heard a strange noise, but the first time I didn't hear anything. Just woke up unable to move.

This happens to me occasionally, and it blows. Thankfully I don't usually get hallucinations anymore...a few years ago I'd hear the sound of someone screaming every time I got it.

                  Re: Sleep Paralysis

This used to happen to me all the time, but it's been a while (knocks on wood).

It usually would happen while I was still asleep and my wife was up getting ready for work int the bathroom a few feet from the bed. I could hear her shower, blow dry her hair, etc... but i could not wake up.

I was using all of my energy but couldn't move a muscle. In my mind I would be screaming for her to help me, but it i was actually just quietly moaning. Eventually my wife would hear me or see me straining and wake me up. I would be totally exhausted. It usually would happen if I went to sleep really late and I was only asleep for 3-4 hours.

                  In short, it sucks.
                  Good job! Good effort!

                    Re: Sleep Paralysis

Yes it sucks and I've dealt with it my whole life. Mine is always the same and happens within the first 5-10 minutes of going to bed. I always see a shadowy figure by my bed coming at me. It's kind of weird because it used to scare the crap out of me but now I know what it is and doesn't really terrify me like it has in the past. Don't get me wrong it's still really freaky. I think my trigger is being really tired.

It hasn't happened to me in some time now.

                      Re: Sleep Paralysis

This runs in my family, for some reason. It happened to my sister a lot, she claims that drinking water before going to bed helps. Personally, that doesn't help me much. And my uncle used to get a lot of them when he was younger, and he claims he only got them during a certain part of his teenage life... So perhaps they are mostly related to stress.

This happens to me once in a blue Moon. Scary as hell. I just try my best to close my eyes and fall back asleep. I don't hear any strange noises, but I do see some pretty screwed up shadows on the wall. I have that 'evil is lurking' feeling too. Just a terrible experience.

its scary. makes you not want to go to sleep.
ive been going through something similar for 20 years.
usually happens once a month. had it happen last month for the first time in a year.

not sure what triggers it ive tried everything. at first it seemed to only happen if i napped during the day, so stopped napping.

the only time it never happens is if i am bundled drunk.

sometimes i can feel it coming on and i wake up in time, but if im too tired to get up it hits me and its scary as ****. lasts about 5 10 seconds???

Odd that this was posted. Not sure if it's in the same boat as you guys, but in the Philippines we have a demon who does this to their victims. It's just like how you describe it. You're awake, but you feel as if there is something or someone holding you down. There are times where it feels like your mouth is being covered.

Philliesfan and anyone else that has had this problem, have you guys ever seen ghosts or felt a presence among you?
