Re: Sleep Paralysis
I've read alot about this since I was diagnosed with sleep paralysis as a teen. I agree with everyone in this thread in saying it sucks...sucks balls hard.
I've never been able to pinpoint how it happens or what triggers it. Sometimes its in the first 5-10 minutes of falling asleep, other times it'll happen in the middle of the night.
From what I was told by a doctor was that it happens in the REM (rapid eye movement) part of sleep. REM sleep is the time when you start to dream. So basically your mind is inbetween the stage where REM sleep begins but a part of your brain is still actively awake.
I dont believe all the demon/spirit hype. I've never encountered wierd noises, witches layin on my chest, shadows creeping through the dark, ghost talk or none of that. What I do notice is that while its happening, sometimes it feels like I'm dreaming of a scenario (like actually moving a body part only to realize I haven't moved an inch) or being awake to the point where I can feel the struggle of trying to move. What I normally do after I realize I cant move is relax, stop fighting and wait it out. I usually just snap out of it.
It sucks cause depending on what position you're sleeping, you can definitely block your air pipes and during the entire ordeal, you're gasping for air with the hope that you'll snap out of it before you stop breathing.http://neverfollow.biz (Independent Music Group)Comment

Re: Sleep Paralysis
Yep, what Graphik said. During REM sleep the brain completely shuts down the motor pathways as a means to prevent you from actually acting out your dreams. The actual disorder is that the mechanism that triggers sleep paralysis is out of sync so that it is triggered before you brain is fully asleep or doesn't turn off promptly when the brain comes to a waking state.
There is actually another disorder in which sleep paralysis fails occur and the person actually will act out their dreams. My psychology professor in college told my class about a friend of his who suffered from this condition. His friend had played football in the past and would often dream about playing football and one night while still asleep got out of bed and tackled his dresser breaking his collarbone in the process.Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII

Re: Sleep Paralysis
I've have it happen to me occasionally. and by that I mean once a year or so.
I don't believe I've ever seen a figure, but I can't move and whenever you try to scream, nothing comes out and it just makes it that much worse because of how helpless you feel at that point.
A friend of mine said she has them, and sometimes something (a person, but a messed up looking person) comes crawling through er window and she wakes up right whenever it gets beside her bed.--
Have you ever wanted to coach or play basketball at the next level, but something prevented you from achieving that dream? Fret no more. Ask me about SimWorld Hoops to see how you can create your virtual self, and follow your path from the prep-level to the pros.

Re: Sleep Paralysis
I had this happen multiple times over the course of a few weeks on a few occasions.
I try screaming etc.. and eventually I manage to get my arm to fall off side of bed or leg...anything to "knock" me awake.
Can't freaking stand it. It really is terrifying. At least for me it is.
Hasn't happened in a while though.. thankfully.Joshua:

Re: Sleep Paralysis
I've never had this happen to me, but I wake up once every few months from severe acid-reflux. I basically vomit into my mouth, wake up and can't breathe. I gasp for air for about 30 second before it finally subsides. It's super scary, so I can only imagine if I subconsciously woke up and couldn't move at all!NFL: Green Bay Packers

Re: Sleep Paralysis
This, I've never actually seen anything but I always have a feeling of uneasiness like someone/something is there with me, by the time I come out of it my heart is usually pounding from that feeling of trying to move or scream for help because you feel like someone is there with you that shouldn't be.Favorite Teams:

I've had it happen once. Just couldn't get up...no evil figures or anything.
