    Re: Sleep Paralysis

Went through this last night. It was pretty chill. I've never had the hallucinations and such; it's always strictly been paralysis for me.

      Re: Sleep Paralysis

we just had a newborn girl, so Im guessing I'll be getting this more frequently now from having to get up in the middle of the nite, then having to try and go back to sleep.

Thought it was gonna happen this morning, because i had to feed her at 3am, and she didnt konk back out until 4am. I thought as soon as I hit the pillow i was gonna have an episode. luckily it didnt happen. still only slept 2 hours.

anyone else wonder what they look like when theyre having an episode?? I would love to see what i look like.

I had a minor bout with this in the middle of the night again. It wasn't as extreme as when I made this thread about it though. Luckily it was very short this time.

            Re: Sleep Paralysis

I think I had this over the weekend.

I woke up around 4am, some acid reflux had woke me up. Way too many craft beers and hotwings during the games on Saturday. So right after I thought I was dozing off again. It happened. It was like I was awake but I couldn't move. I felt like I couldn't breath. I could see everything in the room just fine but I couldn't get myself to move. I was telling myself to get up but couldn't. I was afraid I was having a stroke or something. I didn't have any visions or anything other than being able to look across the room and see everything and wondering how can I turn the tv on because I thought that might jar me out of this, but I couldn't move to get the remote.

I didn't want to go back to sleep after that. So I got up walked around took a bunch of deep breaths and drank a vitamin water and went to back to bed. I was fine after that.

            Scary stuff.

              Re: Sleep Paralysis

Had a somewhat bizarre experience last week like I was laying awake in bed, but was actually dreaming. I was lying on my right side with my arms bent so my hands were up next to my head and I had only a sheet covering when someone or something lifted my fleece blanked at spread and covered me with them. I wanted to look up and see who/what was there, but I couldn't move. I was thinking I was having a paranormal experience and, oddly enough, was event thinking that I had to post about this "Do we have ghosts?" thread on OS Then I actually woke up and was laying in virtually the exact same position I was in the dream and the amount of light in my bedroom was even the same.

I've actually had those kinds of experiences a number of times, though they don't scare me or anything, I guess because I know what sleep paralysis is and so I kind of know what's going on even if I'm not aware of the fact that I know what's going on.

Actually, I still remember the first time I had such an experience and it did freak me out then. It was when I was in middle school and in the dream I was laying in my bed on my side staring out my open bedroom door at a nightlight in the small section of hall that separated mine and my sister's rooms (Our rooms were each about 1/2 of the attic of our house) when I heard someone coming up the steps. The steps were uncarpeted wood and creaked a lot when someone walked up/down them. I then woke up laying in the exact same position and my heart was pounding.

                Re: Sleep Paralysis

Without looking it up I believe this is a phenomena that occurs when your Body fails to go through it's normal sleep cycles, and when you are transitioning out of one cycle to another your Mind fails to send a signal to wake you up. So your eyes are open and your visual perception is there but you are fooled into thinking you are awake, while your mind is still going through a sleep cycle.

Don't find it surprising that many of the occurrences in this thread happened while going to sleep extremely late, or being under stress.

A little bit of the opposite. When you hit REM sleep, your brain sends a signal to basically shut off your muscles. Sleep paralysis occurs (usually) because of a disruption of REM sleep where the brain sends the signal to shut off your muscles (atonia, I think it's called) but you're awake.

I've had this happen much more often than I'd like.

I can't say I've ever had some of the "paranormal" effects/feelings of it though. I just literally can't move my body no matter how hard I try and all I want is for someone to be around that I can ask to move me.

I actually just read something about this last week and supposedly if you focus on your breathing and take deep, controlled breaths, it helps.

I had my second experience with sleep paralysis only about an hour ago. The first time I had it was back in 2008. What a scary and helpless feeling this gives you.

For those who don't know what sleep paralysis is, it is something that happens while falling asleep or waking up. Your mind is awake, but your body isn't. Thus making you unable to move. Hallucinations and hearing things are also common with this. A lot of people have said they sense an evil presence in the room as well.

It's a very strange, scary, and interesting thing to have happen to you. Two times in four years this has happened to me. Both times while my wife wasn't home too. I can't stop thinking about what happened to me. I was absolutely terrified. I had been in and out of sleep most of the night because my 8 month old son kept waking up in his crib. Not sure if the messed up sleep pattern during the night caused it. I woke up to a strange sound that I can only describe as the spaceship type or beaming up sound you hear in movies. The next thing I know, I can't move or hardly breathe. It feels like something is sitting on your chest with their hand over your mouth. I really felt like there was some kind of evil presence in the room. It is physically exhausting to try to move your body when you can't. I had tunnel vision and I saw one of my black tattoos on my arm turn white during this experience. I haven't been able to get back to sleep since.

I called my wife at work a few minutes after I woke up to tell her about it.

Just curious if any of my fellow OS'ers have had experiences or deal with this frequently, and how you handle it?
I know exactly what you are talking about.

I've had similar, just as you described and then some. Its as if something is holding you down, you can't scream, move, or anything but you do feel a "presence" in the room. When it happened to me I prayed about it and moved on, has not happened again in over 7 years.

I have also had out of body experiences, deja vu, and visions but I don't want to take this off topic.

Maybe that's why I've never experienced this. I always sleep on my side.
