Actually, I think I saw the answer to this somewhere a while back. Might actually be in the early pages of the classic threads thread.
Think it was something like the original owner of the account had a lot of classic posts/threads and some of the admins were always messing with him back in the early days of the forum. Eventually that user wanted his account deleted so he could start fresh, but the admins wanted to keep the account around for posterity and so people could search for that posters posts so they changed the name to DONOTDELETE and gave him a ridiculous join date I guess so later members couldn't easily ID who that user had been. Actually, that account might even contain notable posts/threads from more than one user that have been lumped together under a single account.
There are actually a few deleted accounts around in which the username is not clickable and the title under the username says 'guest' and these usernames are also not searchable (i.e. won't produce results if you search for that name using the search feature).
