Participation awards? That's so lame. I remember participating once in an inter-school sports tournament in which our school finished last and still got a medal for competing, we felt so bad that we didn't even want to pick them. Getting any recognition in my opinion is worse than getting nothing at all, I'd take it as a mockery like if I can't be better than that, I prefer getting nothing so I can motivate me to become better and get an award I deserve.

I'm in the same boat of thought.

If I didn't win, I don't want to be celebrated or recognized.

Unfortunately, the society that is raising today's children is helping to develop a sense of entitlement where they should get a reward, even though they didn't earn it.

We always got participations rewards on Field Day, I never counted it if I didn't win anything else but if I did then i'd count it towards my total # of rewards

Hands down the best Field Day reward I got was a yardstick of bubblegum for blowing the biggest bubble of bubble gum.

In Elementary School I kind of understand, kids get upset if they don't get something and that's the last thing I really want to deal with. After that period though kids should understand they have to actually do something to get something.

I was too busy winning the lap around the football field and 100 yard dash to worry about participation awards...

I was lightning quick in Kindergarten, but as I got older I was lucky to sniff 3rd place in any racing event. Used to get chased by a neighborhood dog and I would abandon the bike and do it on foot. Then take a .22 rifle with me to get my bike. Not to intentionally shoot anything, but a nice rat shot round wouldn't kill a dog anyways. I just fired at a tree or the ground and the dog took off. **** I still don't like rottweillers (sp?).

My uncle doesn't like Rottweilers for practically the same reason. He used to deliver pizzas on his bike when he was in high school and I guess there was always this one Rottweiler that was in an area he frequently biked through and it would always chase him.

My great aunt had one that absolutely hated kids and she knew it. Anyways, she lived close and one night she decided to bring her to the storm cellar. We are all sitting around the lamp and a loud lightning/thunder sequence happens and I barely flinched a few inches. If I hadn't flinched, that dog would have ****ed my leg up. It ripped the entire leg out of my pants and left teeth marks and a few scratches where it missed.

She says," well if you didn't move that wouldn't happen" and both my grandmother and mother flipped out on her and made her take the dog up the stairs and back into a small house that we typically went to when it was storming. It was connected to the storm cellar.

Just found out one of my students may be paralyzed. He went to get surgery for his scoliosis and apparently he had swelling on his spine that now has him paralyzed. No idea if it's permanent. They could finish today b/c the swelling was still there. They're going to try again tomorrow.

I've had students tell me about a sibling committing suicide, being molested, losing mom and little brother in a car wreck.

No class or book prepares you to hear stuff like this. Every hair on my body stood up when the principal told us this. I don't understand the way life works at all.

I know some of you in here aren't happy where you're at in life, I'm not gonna preach to you, but try and make sure you remember the little things you take for granted. I also take stuff for granted too. **** like this makes me realize how lucky I am.

Dang....hope he heals up. That's scary.

A friend of my sister committed suicide 4 years ago at the age of 20. His younger brother did the same 2 days ago at the age of 17. I just can't imagine being in the shoes of the family. So gut wrenching.

Yea hopefully the kid pulls through, I can't imagine dealing with that. Situations like what you guys mentioned are always so heart-wrenching. Life is so fragile, you just can't take it for granted, whether your own or your time with your loved ones.

That's just horrible. I hope he gets better. My wife tells me stories from being a teacher as well. Not sure how you guys handle some of the situations you are put in.

Sheesh, that's crazy and that dog clearly had some issues if it reacted like that. Also can't believe your aunt would've acted so nonchalant about it.

My sister has an ~120 lb Rottweiler who is super friendly (though he may have a few screws loose). He let my little nephew sit on him and stick things in his ear and would seem totally oblivious to it.

When I was growing up, that's how our neighbors Rott was. Little me would always waddle off into their yard and play with it. Super nice dog (and at the time it outweighed me by a good 2-2.5x.)

I've always been around big dog breeds and haven't ever seen the issues people whine about with them - obviously they exist but it's about the people raising them. That's why these dog breed legislations and issues really irk me.

My neighbors had multiple Rottweilers, my aunt has always had (and bred) Boxers, couple of my friends have Pit Bulls and they are all the nicest dogs.

The only dogs I've ever been bitten by were my own and that's when 1) our baby Shih Tzu was teething and 2) when I'd be playing tug of war or something with our Springer Spaniels and I'd grab the rope by their mouth and they'd move forward for a better grip. I've never had any issues with any dog, whatsoever.
