Thinking of Pursuing a Career in Business

Every since I graduated High School I've kind of been meddling around with some low level retail jobs, and currently I'm doing work at a distribution center that ships merchandise to some major retailers. So for the past few years I've developed a basic background on Business basics without really even trying.

I've worked first hand in stores and learned that Business revolves around Merchandise, and the Selection of products. There are many intricacies involved in this; What type of Product are you trying to sell? Which group of people is your product trying to target and then marketing your merchandise to those groups effectively. Is your selection of merchandise of the best quality, and is it recent and up to date with what is in demand at the moment.

Then you get to the financing portion of Business, being able to fund your Business, acquire product, and manage your revenue the money you bring in. There are numerous other aspects to Business such as Staffing, finding out how many Employees are required to run the various aspects of your Business. Hiring, Then delegating out tasks, and managing Employees. Making sure everyone involved has an able task. Managing inventory, Inventory either makes you money or costs you money, you have to decide how to handle old product that's not selling. That's pretty much the basics of what I've learned from just being a laymen through the years.

I've never really decided what type of long term Career option to go to School for, just trying to figure out if this is the right Field for me to try and get into. Are there any Business Majors out there that can tell me what are some Entry level Business positions for graduates? and what the best Course of studies are for someone Interested. Thanks.

Usually most people will have some type of focus, not a general business major as that really is a waste now. You've basically learn the general stuff on the job.

Search google for business majors and that will give you an idea of the type of majors offered and the employment opportunities after college. You don't really need a business major any more as companies hire all types of majors. This link will help you start out.

I have a MIS and Accounting degrees with a CS minor. It allowed me to stay in a technology field, but also deal with the Business side and make more money because of that.

I agree it seems like Companies are getting really specific with what they want for positions, and the type of background they want you to have. So just a general Business Major wouldn't be as useful.

I kind of feel like the direction I want to go in is Business Management, Marketing, and I'd probably have to brush up and improve my skills in Speech & Communications. Thanks again for the input.

Accounting is always a great business major to pursue. Though you will most likely need to pass the CPA after you manage to get your degree.
