 Re: Uncommon Opinions

Listening to Surfing with The Alien because of the initial post now. Some of my favorite guitarists to listen to:

--Randy Rhoads (sheer fluidity. man, what could have been...)
--Eric Johnson (amazing tone and variety, a melodic speedster)
--Alex Lifeson (great textures, VERY underrated solo player)
--Brian May (you know it's him from the first note. Very inventive)
--Jimi Hendrix (sheer feel, and took what Beck was doing at the time w/feedback to the next level)
--The Edge (from 'Boy' through 'All That You Can't Leave Behind', he and Alex Lifeson are to me the two best textural guitarists)
 --Pete Townshend (raw power)
--Tom Morello (stunning player w/best use of effects since Hendrix)
--Mark Knopfler (just listen to the man's work with Dire Straits!)

 re: List
 Spoiler
Randy Rhoads is the primary reason I listen to solo Ozzy. He gets the crunchy-bite, but still rollicks with country/rockabilly and bluesy riff bases.

The more I listen to Queen the more I realize you can never listen to too much Queen. May's tone is so simple, but elusive.

I never really could get into U2 for some reason.

Tom Morello kind of wears thin on me after Evil Empire. The first Audioslave album was a bit of a refresher, but he felt too constrained and unmotivated on the other two. His NIghtwatchman stuff is pretty entertaining and provides a nice contrast. He even has a decent voice.

Mark is underrated to me. The tone he gets and comes up with is just always perfect. Dire Straits is badass.

This probably shouldn't be called a favorites list, but it'll be close:

Danny Gatton -Not sure how many bells he will ring, but as far as rip-roaring rockabilly goes he's pretty damn good. His old guitar lessons on youtube have been invaluable to me. Simple stuff, but very effective.
Jack White - For me, its that less is more approach combined with his versatility to flow from one vaudeville style to another.
Kim Thayil - Easily my favorite from the 90s. He has power and grit in his riffs and isn't showy, but has some beautiful licks and tones throughout Soundgarden's discography.
David Gilmour - The "empty space" guy. So many damn goodies in his career. Plus, he always has impeccable tone.
Clapton - This is pre-solo Clapton. So, Derek & The Dominoes on back which is probably his best album. Honestly I prefer his Cream style the most.
Slash - Technical flair, but he doesn't pummel you into the ear-drum with it. Love all his riffs.
Derek Trucks - hands down my favorite slide guitarist. Dude is just effortless and has that flow-through that just cannot be taught. He incorporates an endless array of styles that really makes his style hard to replicate.
Elmore James - If you don't feel something move inside as his slide moves across the guitar strings you're soulless and a commie sympathizer. Probably.
Duane Allman - The Holy Trinity of Slide is completed. I just think his stuff is just so beautiful to listen to even when he's striking hard like Whipping Post. Plus, as good as Clapton was on Derek & The Dominoes, Duane was better.
Brian Setzer - I like his Stray Cats material the most, but nobody really does the country-swing/rockabilly thing like he does.

DOH on me for forgetting David Gilmour! He's on my list. He can make a guitar wail and ache like no other.
