 Re: Uncommon Opinions

Ehhh, I don't think it's much different that what the Superstars get in the other major sports.

Lebron James is only making $17.5 Mil this year in the NBA, FWIW.I'm pretty sure I heard on SVP & Russillo today that Kobe is going to make 30 million dollars next year.

 Re: Uncommon Opinions

Sabermetrics would really take off if it wasn't for the elitism showed by people that have already adopted them.

NBA superstars are INSANELY underpaid. Note: I said superstars. As in real superstars. Lebron, Durant, Kobe, Chris Paul type players.

If you're an elite, two sport athlete, there's literally no reason to play football. Way more money, security and far less injury risk in baseball and basketball. ... Given the fact that the 4 players you mentioned are earning a combined $80M this year... I have to disagree. ... Given the fact that the 4 players you mentioned are earning a combined $80M this year... I have to disagree.

Also, in other sports: Top NFL base salary is Manning at $20M next is Asomugha at $15M... so Bryant makes more than Manning does (in base salary, so not including bonuses, etc, but I'm sure endorsements more than make up for it) and the other three each make more than #2 in the NFL. I'll give it to you if we're comparing to the MLB. If we're talking NHL, top salary is $12M... not even close. In soccer, tops (Samuel Eto'o) is $26M, next (Christiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic) is >$17M... so even comparing sports, they aren't underpaid by any means... about average.Last edited by mb625; 02-26-2013, 12:18 AM.MLB: Minnesota Twins

 Re: Uncommon Opinions

The reason NBA superstars referenced above are underpaid has to do with the amount of revenue they generate for the team in the form of jersey sales, ticket sales, concessions, TV deals, etc. If there wasn't a salary cap in basketball, those players would undoubtedly be earning MUCH more.Yankees | Titans | Huskers | Kings

If there were no max-salary and any of those players were on the open market, they'd probably triple their current salary.

Comparing to other sports is tough because there are only 5 NBA players on the floor at a time and they all play both ways; making a true superstar more valuable than a superstar in other sports because of the impact they have over the entire game. Simply put, you're not winning in the NBA without a top 5 (top 3?) player. You can't say that about any other sport.

The money they make in endorsements has nothing to do with the salary the team pays them.Last edited by dsallupinyaarea; 02-26-2013, 01:08 AM.NFL - Vikings

 Re: Uncommon Opinions

I'm not looking to piss of the baseball fans here...but I'd be more interested in the sport if the season were half as long. 82 games of ANYTHING is about my maximum attention threshold. I know it'll never happen, though.GO 'HAWKS!

 Re: Uncommon Opinions

I've tried to follow the Rays off and on for a few years, but I'm not a real fan. I just hate following a sport that I can't catch even half the games to.

I know Basketball has a long season, but I catch the vast majority of Lakers games because they play on the West Coast.Comment

That's why I chose the Reds. It's the only team whose home games are less than an hour for me to go to. I haven't been to a Michigan game in a couple years, have never seen Tampa play, I've already been to multiple Reds games.I've tried to follow the Rays off and on for a few years, but I'm not a real fan. Re: Uncommon Opinions

Here's apparently an uncommon opinion: Professional athletes are not overpaid. They're paid what they're worth based on the revenue they generate for the owners. If anything, most are underpaid due to salary cap restrictions/max contracts.Yankees | Titans | Huskers | Kings

I think the MLB should take away 20 total games. Start the season 10 games later and end 10 games earlier. I can follow but I do reach a stretch where I get tired of watching.

Unrelated to this thread I've noticed I really only watch the first 3 and the last 3 innings if a baseball gameBuffalo Bills
