The military/Marine Corps was truly my redemption, and has set me up for a lot of success for now and in the future.

I am a father of one child, my wife and I have no support system around us, nearest family is an hour away.

As much as standerdized testing or incompetent teachers may be an issue, over-extending yourself as a parent is even more an issue.

My wife had to stay late @ work yesterday. I helped my son w/ his homework, albeit kindagarten homework, however I could not see myself having the necessary time to work full-time and tend to 2 or more children's social, educational, and emotional needs.
I was lucky growing up in that my mom worked only part time during the day while we were at school, so was home when we were home. My father was a high school teacher so got home shortly after we did every day. As it turned out, I VERY infrequently required help of any kind with schoolwork, so interacting with my parents over school matters was minimal. Nor did they pester me over grades unless I brought home bad grades on progress reports or report cards. I always aim to please and don't like conflict, so always did enough to ensure those circumstances didn't arise often.

Some kids need more help than others from their parents...some kids need a push. Some kids you can just let em go and they take care of business.

I didn't care much about my education when I was in high school. It's the biggest regret in my life to date. I did alright when I applied myself, but I didn't always do that, and so I kind of skated by.

I was an awkward kid in high school, so I focused a lot on my grades and really enjoyed classes for the most part, but didn't have to work too hard to do well. I was a good student, but didn't have many friends.

I finished 6th in my class of 600+ but didn't develop any study habits. Got a 2.6 my 1st semester freshman year of college. After that, I didn't have lower than a 3.0 at any point through undergrad or graduate school. I got better at the social aspect of school too.

It seems now like you get out of high school what you put in, academically speaking.

I never felt pressured but again taking about college wad just talk . None of the close family went so talking about fafsas and filing out scholarships...i was on my own, didn't know what the heck to do and it frankly scared me.

Nobody really told me how cool college really was and how you'd be able to pick up so many different experiences and meet great people. Whoever visited obviously left no impression so honestly my only impression sadly was from tv.. Its a different world..remember that show.

Honestly makes me want to throw up thinking about it all, but i had a sister who went to a vocational school to be a nurse and did. I tried as well but it didn't work out as well for me because my mom got cancer shortly after i graduated then died shortly afterwards 2 heart attacks...all less than a year, about in a 6 month span when i graduated.

I never had a chance to figure out what i wanted to do before things went into a tail spin for me but high school to me didn't really give me enough personal involvement as i can't think of one single influential teacher from the entire tenure

Re: Did you care about high school? Then and now...

in every standardized test i ever took i graded in the 99th percentile. (pretty much the best you could do) but i never did any homework or studied a second of my high school life. I am naturally smart so I would skate by with C's and D's and accepted it if it meant i never had to open a book or do any work outside of school. Got in a crapload of trouble at home because of it. M parents got on me a lot and cared deeply but i just couldnt be changed. Im already spending 7 hours a day in school and then when i get home i have to do a couple hours of homework? F that.

Now im in college with a near 4.0 gpa. Loved college since the beginning and if high school was more like this than i would have succeeded.

Re: Did you care about high school? Then and now...

i've never had to give it my all in school to get good grades, especially HS. it's resulted in me having a pretty poor attitude about my education. don't get me wrong, i enjoy learning, but i'll do the minimum to get a B, or sometimes a C in college, when i easily could have gotten an A. i'm a pretty good test taker and paper writer, so that helps a lot. HS was basically a joke, i was more concerned with my social life and was a class clown, but i got away with a lot cuz i had a reputation as being a smart kid with the teachers. plus athlete, so life was pretty easy. like someone else said though, i always in the top 90th + percentile for standardized testing, 1880 SATs, and i think i'm one of the better BSers out there haha.

Did you care about high school? Then and now...

I only cared enough to pass. I did good in high school. I had a 3.3 GPA but I didn't put much effort into it. I don't miss it and wouldn't want to go back.

I took my ACT and on the science portion I scored in the 95th percentile but I was tired of school and didn't want to go to college. I got accepted and a scholarship to Wyoming which is where I wanted to go but my parents talked me out it. I could have gone to UT Arlington for free and a job in the mail room but I turned that down and joined the military instead.

I wanted to do something with my life and figured 4 years of college wouldn't accomplish much.

I hated high school. Didn't like any of the other kids (school wasn't that big so everyone knew everyone else) and I did not really care about doing the work. My mind always wandered in classes. That being said not doing the homework most time and little study I did well enough in the grades and got 1350 on the SAT so getting acceptance to college wasn't a problem.

Money or lack thereof to pay for college was another story for another day.

Is that score from the old SAT (out of 1600) or the new one (out of 2400)?

Exactly this with my wife when she was in high school. Then went to college in her late 30s and graduated valedictorian.

A small part of me wanted to take it again to see if I could get 700 or better on the Verbal.

It was a crap shoot as to what kind of reading passages you got.

I actually loved high school. I was fortunate to choose a great school that is currently ranked in the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the country. I'm proud to be part of the class that essentially started the school's push into prominence.

I finished fourth in my class and had scholarships to several colleges. One offered me a full ride and I took it.

But I stopped caring in college. My grades were in the C area after being an A student my whole life. Frankly, I stopped caring because my goals had been reached. For me, college was to get a degree so I could start working and a 4.0 or 2.5 wouldn't change what the paper said. So I focused more on social life and less on school.

I did this to the point that I was actually pulled out of my school by the administration and had to take summer classes after my freshman year to get back in and reclaim my money.

I definitely did much better my final two years pulling in a 3.0 but my freshman year ultimately ruined my GPA.

But regarding high school, I loved it. I consider it the place I became a person and learned the most about life and myself. I would give money back to my high school in a heart beat. My college would never get a dime from me.

I don't feel I learned anything in college that I couldn't learn on my own. High school was different. I had great teachers and the best principal (and friend) a student could ask for in my opinion. Would never trade that time for anything.

This is the complete opposite of my experience. I hardly learned anything of importance in high school, but college opened my eyes to what I needed to understand to be a good/successful person.
