    OS Green Thumbs Thread

Anybody got a garden/flower beds they like to work with?

I grew up with my mom always working in her flower beds on the weekends and would rather spend time photographing plants/landscapes than people. Anyway, this past weekend I had the girlfriend help me liven up my apartment patio with some potted plants.

We bought a couple tomato plants (roma) for one pot just because why the hell not? I figure for the price of a tomato at the supermarket I can test out my green thumb. The other pot has three flowers in it: snapdragon, dianthus, and pansy.

Its nice to have an excuse to use the patio other than to grill. My next idea is to do a potted rose plant or maybe a succulent arrangement.

GF is big into growing plants and flowers.

I spent some time helping her plant a few rose bushes at her house last week. Its something I like to do, but never really think about it.
I grew peppers and tomatoes randomly a few years ago. I grew up next door to my grandmother who had the full garden and I helped them a bunch as a kid.. Even shelling peas and ****.. Lol

Yeah, I miss living at home with a garden and a yard.

Talking to my mom about it and she told me they planted 18 tomato plants. I had to ask her again just to make sure she meant what she said. I love maters.

I've always wanted a bonzai tree, but I'm afraid I would kill it.

When I worked at HD, I snatched one from the Garden Center for my desk. They are pretty cool and I kept it alive for a while before giving it away. I had to research how to water and trim it.

We started a 48ftX17ft veggie garden. We've got green beans, corn, tomatoes, squash, cucumber, bell peppers, and one banana pepper plant. I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. We've had too much rain which scares me and another thing is that grass is re-growing throughout the garden which we've never had a problem with before. So I'm crossing my fingers.

I have a 25x15 - 6 Rows veggie garden. Currently have Bell peppers, Black beauty egg plant, jalapenos, cucumbers, tomatoes, and green onion. I had squash and okra in the beds but they ran into some trouble and I lost them. Little to late to I think to attempt them again.

Last year I did to much, Watermelon, squash, green beans, cantaloupe, lima beans, egg plant, tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, and mixed peppers. The watermelon and cantaloupe was a big mistake cause they took over so much room. Granted I did finish with 6 watermelons and 8 cantaloupes, they just need to much space. The lima beans and green beans were a waste of time also, you need so many plants to get a decent amount to be worthy of having them. Takes so much to make a meal. The squash, okra, and egg plant were the best by far. I had so much and used every bit of it.

We have a 4x10 raised bed garden I made 4 years ago.

I tend the garden, and I keep it simple. This year we are doing tomatoes (5 plants, mostly heirloom varieties), cucumbers, summer squash, and carrots. In years past I have done bell peppers, jalapenos, okra, lettuce (will do a fall planting this year), and strawberries.

We are going to move in 2 years or so and when we move I'm gonna do a much larger garden.

I would love to do watermelon and cantaloupe.....but you are right you need a lot of space

See I wanted to try Lettuce this coming fall also. Is it picky or somewhat easy?

lettuce is super easy but it doesn't do well in heat. Check local recommendations on when to plant. In Nashville, you can do a spring and fall planting easily, but summers are more difficult.

Lettuce is great to do in large planters on your deck. I find it much easier to tend that way....as in a garden bed I had too much trouble with critters and the plants tending to lay down causing browning/mushy leaves a lot of the time.
                      On the deck...much more control.

Any of you guys have experience with roses? Probably going back in and setting up a potted rose plant this weekend.

IMO one of the easiest flowers/plants to split, uproot and replant, etc. They are tough to kill.

Went through and pulled up the crab grass that grew around my plants and to my surprise most of the veggies are doing pretty well.

I think we're about a month away from our first tomatoes. The only thing that didn't take were the jalepenos(seeds). I think the birds may have taken off with them, that or the massive amount of rain we had when we first planted them washed them out.
