    Military after college?

I am about to be a freshmen at a small D2 private college, playing football. The school I am going to attend doesn't have an ROTC program, so is there anyway to enlist while I am in college still? In the Guard? And what are the benefits of waiting until after college? Thanks for all the help guys.

My advice would be to see a recruiter. My ex went to college and was in the guard. So I don't see that being a problem.

There's not much benefit outside of the fact that certain amounts of credit hours can help you enlist as up to an E-3 paygrade.

That's nothing you can't get to within' a year in some cases, anyways. You could come out of boot camp as an E-2 and be up for promotion in less than one year.

It could effect some other things too, but it all depends on what your goals are when you first go in.

Just go speak with a recruiter. They will be able to provide the most information about your personal situation.

If you have a college degree, you will be an E4 right off the bat. And you will also have the choice to become an officer right off the bat too. And you don't need to be in an ROTC program to join the military, so that really is irrelevant.

Now sure you can join the guard or the reserves while in college. No benefits from doing it though other then money for school, a pay check while you are active. Either way, your boot camp time going to be the same regardless if you enlist regular, guard or reserve.

Also keep in mind, during war time, the reserves and guard get called up a lot and sent over seas just like regular military does.

If money isnt an option ( and Im assuming its not considering you are going to a private school) I would say focus on school and your football. After you graduate, you will have a lot more doors open to you both with the military and out in the real world. It might not be obvious now, but 4 years from now, you will be a completely different person, with different priorities, and that person you become might not have any interest in the military. If you join, even in the reserves or guard, you are going to go to basic training, you will be enlisted, and could get called up. You will be there every month, 1 weekend a month, and regardless of how small it seems, the military tends to take up more time than advertised. While your roomates and college buddies are going on internships and partying in the summer, you are going to be a private, cleaning weapons, and picking up trash. Obviously you will have other, regular things you'd be doing, but those moments that suck, when you look around and are thinking about what your buddies are doing, and you start thinking "Im in the guard/reserves, this isnt my priority" well, yeah, now you have 3 years left on your contract and regardless of where your priorities are, they are going to expect to see you every month.

I served 8 years, and was a recruiter, so if you have any questions, ask away, my personal opinion is above, nothing more than that!
