        Re: Any cyclists/mountain bikers/commuters?

How's it going, fellas? Hope you all are getting out and enjoying your bikes. I have not gotten out as much as I had hoped so far this summer, but the times I have gone out have been enjoyable.

My last ride was on my mountain bike. I did a few intermediate trails and they were challenging, but I was up to the task. Anticipation is really key when mountain biking, as is keeping your eyes and head pointed forward. When you start to sense and feel turns, dips, rocks, etc. when riding, that's when you can really make progress, increase speed on downhills and really enjoy the ride instead of suffering through.

I am going to start riding the Santa Fe trail once a week with my Giant Sedona. I'll start at 20-mile rides and work my way up.

I am still looking for a road bike, but trying to find one for under $1,000 isn't easy.

I still haven't bought a new bike, hah. But I'm still riding. I introduced my older brother to mountain biking and he's now all in, so that's pretty cool. We've been tackling a fair bit of trails around southeast Michigan. The bike I'm currently using is beginning to stick between gears and some of the brakes only work some of the time.

It's still humorous to read about you guys starting at 20 mile mountain trail rides and working your way up. Just a little bit more than 20 miles is my biggest mountain biking trail ride of the past two years! I guess it'd be a little easier if I had a real bike but even then, a lot of you guys are next level.

So I have a sad confession.

I've never changed a bike tire before.

I bought a road bike about 6 years ago, road it alot for the first couple years, then I stopped and want to start it back again. But both tires are flat. Added air and no go.

So no I'm on the verge of getting a new tube. numbers on my tire state (25-622) 700X25C

Is this the right tube for me? http://www.sportsauthority.com/produ...9576&view=grid

Should I get a new tube or try to fix my current tube?

Newer isn't always better. If you find a bike that you like, no reason you can't ride it for 10 years if you take care of it. I've had my mountain bike for 5 years now and I see no need to upgrade. I just want a road bike so I can experience that type of riding, as my hybrid would really classify more as a mountain bike if you really wanted to get technical.

Sounds like it may be time for you to get a new bike, or at least get a full tune-up for the current bike. That's cool that you got your brother to start riding; it really is contagious once people get out and experience it for themselves.

I'm nowhere near next-level. I'd probably still rank as a beginner or intermediate rider at best, simply because I have not logged many miles the last 2 years. I just ride for fun. I wish my schedule allowed for me to do it more, but part of it is I need to be better about just going and getting on my bike, even if it's just for an hour or 90 minutes after work. I tend to get caught up in feeling like I should be riding for 2-plus hours, and that's just not really probable for me.

That's not a sad story. I think a lot of people that ride probably can't change a tire themselves ... myself included. I don't travel with a tool kit or tubes or anything, even though I know I should, especially when I'm on trails. But, I never ride far from home, so as long as I have a phone I know I can get back home.

I do need to go to my LBS and sit in on those free classes that go over the fundamentals of repairing your bike.

Well, instead of complaining about not having enough time to ride, I did something about it last night. I had contemplated going running, but honestly wasn't in the mood so I said screw it, throw on the bike shorts and gear and took the Giant Sedona out for a nice 50-minute ride.

The ride was maybe 10 miles but I honestly didn't pay attention to distance or anything like that. I just know that I pedaled for 50 minutes straight, attacked some very small hills and accelerated like crazy through the downhills and straightaways. I had a lot of fun just riding, and I think that's the most important part.

Thanks for the encouragement. A few Youtube videos and finally making the trip to Sports Authority to get tire levers finallly taught me how to change a bicycle tire. Quite easy too.

I tried to follow instructions on how to remove the tube without levers and that got me so frustrated and tore my hands up that I almost gave up.

So if you do plan on changing tires, go get levers. Or you can try it without, but have some patience, unlike me.

Check out my new purchase! First road bike and I'm really excited about it. Going to ride 2-3 times a week to work (less than 10 miles one-way) and of course on the weekends. My hybrid just was too heavy to handle the hills on the commute. I'll still use it when I go out for a ride with my wife.

Hey guys, what's going on for 2015? What are you riding? How often are you riding? Any specific goals?

I'm looking forward to commuting to work on my new Fuji (see link in previous post) Sportif 2.3 C road bike. It's supposed to be near 60 degrees here in CO tomorrow, so I'm thinking of making my first trek to the office (I've got some nice thermal gear so the morning ride won't be bad).

My wife and I are planning a nice week-long vacation in June that will have us doing some pretty cool rides in Telluride and Moab, Utah. I've always wanted to ride in both places as there are incredible trails and scenery at both destinations. Should be a lot of fun.

Outside of that, my goal is to ride 2-4 times a week, with one ride a week dedicated to mountain biking.

Got my first ride of the year in on Sunday. It was a solid 90-minute loop (maybe a total of 15 miles) from my house across town and back. The wind was BRUTAL at times and it was a cross-wind so I caught it a few times. The only positive was that the wind was at my back on the way home, which was mostly uphill.

Hey DJ. So if you're planning on coming to Telluride and Moab, then you're in my neck of the woods. June will be absolutely gorgeous in Telluride, in Moab, prepare for the heat.

In my area, there is a rather secret society of bikers. One guy in my community spearheaded the Paradox Trail. A lot of trails, equally gorgeous Colorado scenery. In fact, if you travel from Telluride to Moab, you'll be going through Paradox Trail territory.

I was an active cyclist years back but only just putter around the area now.

Enjoy your trek to the Western Slope; God's Country
