19 firefighters killed in wild Arizona blaze

The bodies of 19 elite firefighters who were overtaken by a raging wildfire in central Arizona were recovered and taken to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office today, according to Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo.

An elite team of 19 firefighters died Sunday while trying to protect themselves under fire-resistant shields from a fast-moving wildfire in Yarnell, Ariz., according to officials.

Authorities believe the wildfire began in Yarnell, about 90 miles northwest of Phoenix, Friday with a lightning strike and spread to at least 2,000 acres Sunday amid triple-digit temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions. As of 3 a.m. this morning, the Yarnell fire had tripled in size and is now 6,000 acres, according to Arizona incident commander Mike Reichling.

A lot of these guys have families they're leaving behind. These folks keep us all safer, but this is truly tragic.

People say firemen like myself....who are "aggressive interior attack" type firefighters(some places will only fight the fires from inside if there is a life hazard CONFIRMED....these would be considered exterior...mostly volunteer departments with low manpower...we go in no matter what) crazy. But I could always jump out a window(if I can get to one) if I get caught in a world of ****.

Hotshot crews(I've been out west to aid in fighting wildfires...but it's not on the front lines when we send out mutual aid....we are simply not trained for that kind of firefighting) have truly big balls though. One second everything is fine...the next....world of **** with nowhere to go.
I've read a lot of comments on the pages of some online media and they question why these guys(and girls) would go in to fight this....not realizing how quickly and badly these could spread to large residential communities if these guys didn't do what they do.

          R.I.P. brothers.

            Awful,
hopefully a more resistant tent will come from this.

I wasn't gonna comment in this thread because it hits home emotionally for me. My dad was a fireman and a cop, and this was the kind of stuff we always feared would happen.

Luckily he made it through combined 35 year career as a cop/firefighter. Although he was seriously injured in a crash during a pursuit which caused him to have 3 back surgeries and miss two years of work. But at least he came home.

I can't imagine what the families are going through now. I just hope that somehow they can take solace in the fact that the ones they lost are truest hero's imaginable.

Very sad. Wildfires are nuts, they don't really happen around here but out west they seem to ravage areas often.
