Deciding on a career path in life

Try to make this as short as possible guys. I am 27 and live alone in my own house, live in a small town of about 40,000. I have a lot of close friends as I grew up here. I have travelled quite a bit in my life and love it. But my hiccup is this. I don't really care for my job that I have been doing for 6 years. It just bores the crap out of me and the weeks feel so long sometimes. The downside is there is not a lot of well paying jobs in my town.

One option, I could do is go away for work and it would be something like a 10 days and 10 days off type of thing, this would be good money, more then i make now, but just basically another job in a sense. It would be doing some labor type stuff and then maybe eventually getting into machine type work with bulldozers etc. The thing is its in middle of no where, so your there to work for 10 days and in Canada the winters a freaking cold or wet..

Now for the longest time I have always wanted to be a pilot and i have actually done some flight training a few years ago.. The thing is airline pay is quite low until a couple of years into the job. The training it self is quite a bit of money as well, which I do have a lot saved, but may new a small loan so I don't blow all my money. I would have to move away for flight training as there is now no school in my area.

My biggest thing is the fear of the unknown and moving away from my family and close friends. I have a good core of friends and it would suck to leave them and especially moving away from my family. On the other hand flying just seams like a dream to me, it doesn't feel like work and I love traveling..But i fear I might not make the friends i have now or other things, might not work out. I don't love my town i live in now, but I like the people around me. Im also wondering, if I'm I thinking all this because im lonely sometimes. All my friends have girlfriends and im really the only single one..

    Any suggestions?
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

    Cheers

Do what you're most passionate about in life and then the money will come. If aviation is your thing and it's what gets you up in the morning then pursue that.

You still have a lot of working years left, might as well do something that you love. In order to reach your goals you need to start taking risks too.

You desperately need to read "Quitter" by Jon Acuff.

Good luck to you in whatever you decide.

Definitely go after aviation. I have had a true passion for aviation for a few years now, but am too young to do anything about it. When my sports career dies down, it is definitely what I am going after. The salary is good too, I must say.

Go for your dream, even if it means moving away from your friends and family.

From the time I was old enough to know what a plane was, and that humans sat in the pointy end and were paid to fly them, I've wanted to fly for a living. Unfortunately, I can't come close to passing a medical thanks to being born with some terrible hearing. Despite being extremely happy with life right now, I'd still give up almost everything to be in your shoes and have the ability to go for my dream.

Re: Deciding on a career path in life

You're young, no family obligations, no kids, nothing stopping you but yourself and you have an interest in something that will make you happy.

Go for it man... money is not always the medium to your happiness or you wouldn't even be considering something like that right now. On top of it you never know what thing can turn into just by making that one decision.

Don't wait 10 years down the line still asking the same question. Family and friends if they love you will support you and be there when you get back.

You got me beat. I have 10,000, but the high school is combined with the two adjacent towns, which have 6,000 and 4,000.

I grew up in a town of similar size (a little over a thousand) and I have a friend who considers Ames (60,000 not including ISU) a small town and I make sooo much fun of him for it.

Have you Considered the Air Force? It wont help you fly but it will give you some direction in life.

Re: Deciding on a career path in life

I was a drink server at a casino all throughout college, I started on the floor, then got into the poker room, then lucked into a high limit gig room for my last year. I made roughly 3x more then than I do now. I am 10,000x happier now than I was back then. I hated that job. It was not a healthy environment, in many more ways than I care to share.

My passion is helping kids have fun and be happy, not hanging out with miserable gamblers every day and rarely having a night or weekend off. I'm now a Significant Special Needs Teacher at a high school and I'm, professionally speaking, probably the happiest dude on the planet. I'm happy to get out of bed every morning. I'm never watching the clock or counting down the days until next break. It's my dream job.

It sounds like your passion is flying. You need to become a pilot and never look back. Happiness is not something a fatter paycheck can compensate for.

I truly wish nothing but the best for you. Good luck. Get your license and fly as much as you can for the rest or your life. Have faith in things that make you happy.

Your friends and family will always be in your life, one way or another
