    Problems on ebay

A couple weeks ago I sold a laptop on ebay. Its 3 years old and in good condition for its age. It functioned perfectly when I sent it out, and the only blemishes on the laptop itself was some paint worn off where your right wrist sits and some dust I couldn't get out under the keys. I cleaned it it as best as I could.

The laptop sold and I shipped it out. About 4 days later the guy contacts me and says he wants to return the laptop because its not in good enough condition. He mentioned both things that I said above. I said that I thought he was being nit picky about the worn paint, which was literally about a half inch, and told him I tried to clean under the keys as best I could. I reminded him the computer was used and its 3 years old just like it said in the description. Then he even admitted that he was being a little nit picky but wanted to send it back anyway.

This is ebay's description of used. An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used. See the seller's listing for full details and description of any imperfections.

I also forgot to mention that I specified no returns with the auction. But even after all of this I decided to let him return it. I asked him to please ship it out the next morning which would have been last Monday and he agreed. So I figure I would give it a few days and it should be here. Well a few days came and went.

I told myself that I would wait till Saturday. So I do, and still didn't get it. I sent him a message that day and didn't hear anything back. I sent him another message Sunday, and didn't here anything back. Finally, last night I sent him a message telling him I am keeping his money and he can keep the computer. I wasn't gonna wait anymore. So of course he responds back and tell me he didn't have time to ship it back to me over the last week and that he will ship it today.

I told him that was ridiculous. He then tells me that there was something wrong with the computer anyway. That a config box keeps popping up and there is no way to stop it. He said he couldn't do anything.

I have never once had any functionality issues with this computer. And now I'm supposed to believe this crap? I have used that laptop to browse and post on OS for the last 3 years. If there was a problem like that I wouldn't have been able to do that.

I told him that if this issue or any other issues is there when I get the computer back then I would have to consult ebay before I pay him back. I feel like I at least deserve to be able to do that after all the BS.

So I guess what I'm asking is am I wrong here? Has anyone had any similar experiences and if so how did you handle it?

I'm really sorry this is so long, but I guess it had to be to tell the whole story.

I'm going to need both your Ebay and Paypal name and password to further investigate the situation and then I'll be able to give some good feedback.

You sold it as used and put the description about what was wrong ... tell him to contact ebay, you are keeping his money

          This.

Like I said to you on twitter though, Ebay almost always sides with the buyer, which is outrageous, especially with cases like this.

Out of 100+ transactions through eBay over the years, I think I've only had two sketchy people I've dealt with.

The key is to be as forthright and detailed as possible when you list items, and it also helps to restrict sales to members with high feedback.

In this situation, it sounds like you are in the right, but with the way eBay works, the buyer could easily still win out here since eBay is so anti-seller in their policies.

You're going to lose, all I can say. As soon as he files a dispute, Ebay/Paypal almost always side with the buyer because they don't want to lose buyers. I only use Amazon to sell now because there are so many people on Ebay that are just so picky. The only cases I've won are on things like international textbooks where I outright put in the description that it is softcover and Ebay closed them pretty quick. Amazon, I've never once had a problem with selling used items.

Not necessarily... the seller offered to accept a return and the buyer didn't ship it after numerous messages. There is so much time you can wait. eBay will either close the case as is IMO or they will cover the refund themselves. At this point I would not accept a return.

Personally I think it sucks if you end up losing out on this. I mean, I was always under the impression when you buy an item used or refurbished you assume a risk for potential "wear and tear." What if this guy just got buyers remorse, or what if he messed something up with that config box and now you are receiving a product in worse condition than you sold it for?

I am naive with this stuff, I don't know how the world works with business type deals, it seems to me that in the realm of "everyday logic" you didn't do anything wrong and this guy is just being a weirdo.
